Correct Sizing of Source and Record Windows
on May 30, 2014 at 10:28:00 pm

I have yet to figure this one out.
How does one go about setting the correct size reflecting the actual size of final outputs?
So, having computer windows actually 720X480, 1280X720, etc.

I have a 27" iMac at home, so plenty of real estate to work with.
I want to see the actual size reflected to judge QC.

FCP 7 allows this, what is the corollary in Avid,
so I don't have to guess by the way the video looks?

The Viewer and Canvas in FCP weren't all that accurate. The ones in Avid are even less so. The interface isn't designed with that in mind. They are there to show you the video images so you can see what you are doing. You cannot make them full size. In fact, the COMPOSER window...preview and program monitors...are tied and cannot be separate. MAYBE if you had a 4K monitor you might be able to get them to the pixel dimensions you want.

But the color reflected in the Composer interface is VERY FAR from accurate. There is a way to make the image fill the screen...like FCP did. But that isn't color accurate either.

For that you need an IO device like AJA and Blackmagic Design and Matrox make....or the ones Avid makes. But Avid's hardware is very expensive.

The best bet for accurate QC, if you have a newer Mac with Thunderbolt, is to add a second video monitor and an AJA T-Tap or BMD Ultrastudio Mini.

You need a proper output to feed a TV. Ideally a reference monitor.

I was speaking more of resolution than color accuracy, outboard ref monitor I have.
Thanks all, at least I know there is not some hidden setting I have missed!
