Can Media Composer 7 edit 1080p 59.94 footage and export same for final master.

Doing an unusual project where the client wants to shoot progressive at 59.94 to ProRes, edit in same format and then export final master to same. After doing some investigation and testing, my belief is that Media Composer can't do it.

Maybe Premier or FCPX. We are investigating the Premier route but our
edit systems are all MC7 so would like to exhaust the possibilities
with that option before going to Premier on Kona cards.

Thanks for any information.

No, Media Composer only does 59.94p at 720 and not 1080. It's been a request for a couple years. Maybe we'll see it as part of the future "independence"references from Avid at NAB. Such as resolution, bit depth, frame rate, etc. preceding the word independence.

Interesting request...and I know camera makers are all over this mode for shooting, but how will one distribute this or play it back?

BluRay doesn't do 1080p60. Sure, the machines will play back that format from an SD card from consumer cameras that shoot that format. But then, is your TV set up to play 1080p60? Most only do 60fps at 720...and 30fps at 1080.

Online distribution? The bandwidth required for 1080p60 might be pretty high...but Netflix is doing 4K, so it's there.

There really isn't a distribution model for that format yet...which is one reason I think Avid is dragging it's feet. Adobe Premiere PRo CC and FCX will deal with this format, yes...

I've been dealing with specificity films that want to work at that rate for a variety of reasons. HFR 3D being one of them as they move to 60 (59.94) and they would rather deal with a better picture at 1080 than 720. If YouTube can do 4K at 23.976, I am sure the bandwidth is there for p60 at 1080 using the same compression method.

Digital signage, museums, etc. are all markets where I hear these requests. They don't want to compromise motion or resolution quality. I don't see why it should be such a huge issue for Avid - they do 59.94 editing, they have 1080. Put the two together. Avid using the "broadcast" excuse is one reason why they can't expand into other markets easily. And while we're at it, I would love to see viewers allow for portrait 16:9 rather than landscape for the digital signage market. I did a museum piece where it was all portrait and it was a pain and small images to flip and reduce so I could sync audio and edit.

This reminds me of all the battles I had at Avid for 23.976p/24p finishing: "no one wants to work that way!" was a debate I had to deal with daily...

We are on MC7 with Nitris DX. I am gonna guess they didn't build that
capability into the Nitris and just adding that capability to the software would't necessarily make it happen on Nitris.

Well the DX hardware does have the ability to have its firmware updated, but whether it can be or not is the question.

Hi Michael,

in the scenario of recording and transcoding to 59.94p base frame rates whats the best way to record the audio? With 29.97 TC?
I am working on specific project where we will be recording 4K XAVC @ 59.94 base rate. We are thinking about syncing the sound then and transcoding to DNxHD145 720p 59.94.

We are obviously very keen the dailies process goes very smoothly resulting in a pain free conform in a 4K 59.94p capable finishing system like Pablo.

There is no SMPTE timecode for 60fps (59.94), so it will need to be 29.97. Media COmposer deals with 59.94p as 29.97 timecode in either a 720p or 1080 project so that it what you should use. The one thing to be sure of is to make sure they are both running DF or NDF and not mix them as AutoSync and grouping do not like mixed timecode genders...

I would go with 29.97 NDF timecode for your sources. If you need DF as a broadcast delivery, then deal with that on your sequence.
