Upgrading Avid mid project
on May 15, 2014 at 11:32:44 am

I am about to upgrade my Avid Media Composer from vers 3, to version 6.5 to be in synch with my main cutting room.
Very simple question, should I delete my version three software first then download and upgrade?

Then simply pull in the bins?

It works fine when I take my synch pulls up to the main edit and pull them into MC6.5 there, it's just that I am mid project and quite a distance away from my main post house.

Thanks for any help on this.
Dan

obviously in a perfect world, you would wait till the project is complete, but situations arise when "best practices" need to be ignored.

I would assume the rules will be the same for 3 as later versions. You will be told to uninstall the software before the new version will install. Just back up your projects folder before proceeding.

In an extreme case you could always rollback to 3, but you shouldn't have any issues.

Thanks Glen, good tips.
I have a break coming up in the edit for a few days, will do it then.

Thanks again,
Dan.

You would also need to de-activate your registration before un-installing, so that you can then activate the new version.

Clone your current working OS and Avid software. Just clone that drive to another drive...cheap external. This is a backup of your working system. THEN upgrade. If things go south in ANY way, you can always recover from the backup.

Thanks for the post Shane.
Is that simply apple C my hard drive and copy it on to an external drive?
Or should I use a program, time machine or something?

Cheers,
Dan.

Thanks for post's guys.
After two scary crashes the upgrade worked fine and my version 3
timelines opened up and played perfectly.

Thanks again for all your post's.

Cheers,
Dan.

if you are on version 3 now, wouldn't you be on a dongle?
