Trying to take Nikon h.264 files shot at 23.98 to a 29.97 project. Can't get a clean pull down conversion in Avid. Resorted to Adobe Encoder CC. The resulting files from Adobe were much smoother looking on an interlaced monitor than the conversion from within the avid. Any help with the right workflow for 23.98 to 29.97?

Make sure the Field Order column is visible in the bin when AMA linking (that column is not on by default)
If it says "unknown" instead of Progressive, it will not add the pulldown correctly.
Select all in the column and right click to change to Progressive.
Transcode your clips and the correct pulldown will be added .

PS: just to be clear, I am advocating linking to the Nikon files via AMA, correcting the field order setting, then transcoding to Avid DNXHD files.

Thank you John. Yes, the field motion is reading progressive. In order to transcode to 29.97, I must open the bin in a 29.97 project correct?

Yes, open first in 23.976, then open that bin in a 29.97p or 29.97i as needed for your conversion.

This is exactly what I've done. The resulting clips on a 29.97 timeline are still not crisp, and suffer from judder. Conversely, the same Nikon h264 files converted in Encoder and imported onto the same 29.97 timeline look clear and very little judder in the fast panning shots.

Interesting... I will do some tests on my end to see what the issue might be.
