MC7: transcoding 2k ProRes4444 to 1920x1080 DNxHD - apect ratio question
on Sep 26, 2013 at 9:31:17 am

Hello all

i'm new to using MC7 and would love some advice if anyone can help - re: maintaining aspect ratio during transcoding from 2k to 1920x1080 (in the past have used Davinci but this time we are going with an all MC7 workflow!)

Original media is 2k ProRes4444 - first linked by AMA, we added a LUT
New media will be 1920x1080 DNxHD36

Doing this on previous films using Davinci i'm pretty sure led to thin letterbox top & bottom to account for the wider 2k aspect. But our first tests on MC7 suggest there are no black borders in the timeline when viewing the DNxHD we have made so far.

So my question i think is - how do we control the aspect ratio issue?

My reading/ watching so far suggests that frameflex is used in the timeline when using AMA and is non destructive. But we are wanting to create DNxHD media for our offline with color and frame changes baked in to all our clips.

Any advice from MC7 experts out there?? Is there some way to tell MC keep the original aspect ratio?

ps. I wonder if in the Consolidate/ Transcode dialogue box if the "apply reformatting option (compatibility mode)" option refers to this in the same way as "apply color transformation" refers to baking in the LUT.

All the best

In source settings, on the FrameFlex tab, you need to set the aspect ratio to be 2.39:1 and select letterbox. You will see the corrected aspect ratio in the "after" window. You can do this to all the clips at once, just click "Apply All" once you got it set.

Hi Michael

thanks so much for your help.

(Back story: I'm not in front of my avid - making things very difficult - i can't just experiment - i'm actually helping out my assistant editor who's in the US while i'm abroad)

2:37 and 2:40 seem to be the only options a first.
And we cant seem to make the blue selection box "bigger" than the image. We'd expect to see black bars top and bottom of the lower image right? But everything we try seems not to produce the desired result.

The only way my assistant has been able to manage this is by changing the upper boxes as you see in the image below.. which i suspect we do not want to do (changing the pixel aspect ratio degrades the image...)

Any further help would be really appreciated!!!

My Arri 2K test files are 2048x1536. Select Image Aspect Ratio menu and at the bottom select custom, then enter 2.39:1. Then in the bottom half, select "letterbox" for the "reformat" selection:

Thanks Michael - therein lay the problem!
Of course my original Arri files are 2048x1152 which i suddenly realised **is** 16:9 (1.777 ratio)
I was so used to working with 2048x1536 i didn't realise for a moment that no reformatting/ letterboxing would be necessary
Thanks so much for your help - i feel silly now!

I did notice that, and was going to bring it up, but thought you did some lens trick with anamorphic on a 16:9 image rather than a 4:3...
