Media Composer DVCPRO FPS Issues
on Jul 3, 2013 at 6:59:39 pm

Hi Guys,

I recently shot a project with an HPX370, and two DSLRs. I had them all set to 24fps. But when I did an AMA link, avid is showing the clips from the panasonic as having 29.97 FPS as opposed to 23.98. It was definitely set to 24p. It was shooting in DVC PRO 1080/60i 24p. But the AMA is not reflecting this. The clips when played back also are very choppy. Just to test, I transcoded the media down to 23.98 and it played perfectly smooth.

Obviously I can just transcode it to 23.98 and have it work but is there a setting I could use so that I can have the AMA come in at 23.98 and just transcode at the end?

Thanks!

It's most likely because it is recorded 24p (23.976) with 2:3 pulldown into a 29.97 video stream. AMA to the clip in a 1080i/59.94 or 1080p/29.97, then open the bin in your 23.976 project.

Sorry Michael I don't quite follow. Do you mean I should start a new project and AMA into there, and then open the bin in a 23.98 project?

I don't know if your 29.97 is a progressive video stream or interlace, but start with 1080i/59.94 and AMA Link. If you need to transcode for performance or other reasons, then transcode while in the matching frame rate project (1080i/59.94 in this scenario). Then open that bin in the 1080p/23.976 project.

So are you saying I shouldn't transcode to 23.98 but to 59.94?

Avid recommends transcoding first (if you feel you need to) at the original camera rate should you ever need to go back to your original sources. If you were to transcode directly from AMA link in the 23.976 you get a big warning how you are creating new media and won't have any link back to original sources.

The HPX370 (and this goes back to the HVX200) has 24p mode and 24pn mode. The n stands for native, and actually shoots 24 frames as opposed to 24 over a 29.97 stream. Like Michael mentioned, this is most likely the case. However, I wouldn't advice working in a 23.976 project. Your footage has the 2:3 cadence embedded, and the Avid will be interpreting those frames at 23.976 with that embedded cadence. It's going to be very stuttery. For best fluidity of motion, I would recommend working at 30i for offline, and delivering 59.94i. That way, the DSLR material at 23.976 will have the pulldown added, and it should be the smoothest possible result. If that's not possible due to delivery requirements, there are a variety of tools to remove pulldown, such as cinema tools.

Mix and Match will usually do the right thing removing the pulldown frame/field from a stream with pulldown. If it misses, you can go go in and change the cadence till it's right.

Can you refresh my memory, Michael: how does one change that cadence?

I believe by opening each motion adapter and changing in there.

He's correct, as usual. Did this recently.
