Woeful AMA links situation
on May 5, 2013 at 8:58:04 pm

My AMA links got messed while outputting the final ProRes master. I hooked up a 5th fw drive to my MC5 (5.0.3) system, and was probably a third of the way exporting the Qt… but when I came back in the room, there was an error message about drives not being properly ejected, sure enough all the external drives were off-line. (Nothing was jostled, faulty fw cable?)

Though I wasn't using many AMA clips in the sequence, they all went off-line. No great surprise there. At this point there are 3 (4?) things I wanted to ask about, first the strangest. Once I manually relinked to the AMA files that I needed in their respective bins, they would come on-line, show up correctly in the sequence… then for unknown reasons later, go off-line again. (Project never closed, nothing I see changed) What gives?

I've been very diligent about archiving the whole project every day with as date stamp, so along with the Attic bins… having older copies of the AMA bins from before this episode, doesn't seem to do me any good. That is, the bin that used to know/see the links and did not experience the drive trauma, now is NG too, is that standard?

The 2nd question is whether one can batch relink AMA clips? When I tried this in the past, it seemed to require me relinking to AMA clips individually, true? I read about a work-around of making a new bin, populating it with the desired clips then attempting to do (plain) reLink to get "empty" AMA clips to see the media there. I must have it wrong because ReLink seems to be all about Avid media only.

Finally, it only happened on one clip but I could not (right-click) to relink to AMA because that command was greyed out, what is that about?

Questions, questions… any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul

I usually would not recommend upgrading mid project, but Avid MC 6.5 is FAR more robust at relinking AMA clips.

Maybe download the trial, if you get desperate. It's fully functional for thirty days.
