Noise and the ultimate export
on Jan 29, 2013 at 1:03:07 am

Hey all,

I am working with 7d footage recording at a 320 iso. I have done a few projects on the 7d and I would like to work on getting a cleaner final product.

I do an AMA link to 8 bit DnxHD QT files and export with a same as source.

Have any tips for cleaner footage? Or perhaps a denoiser I should be using?

I am aware that much of the noise is dependent on iso and that there really is no perfect codec for all jobs.

Cheers.

I always recommend neat video for de-noise. I don't think it works natively in avid, I have an after effecs version and a motion/fcp version. There is an ofx version, but I've had trouble getting it to work.

As far as cleaner images, it all starts with a clean, properly lit and exposed shoot. If you are having to push h.264 in the post process, it will fall apart.

Directors are always asking why its so noisy....I usually ask what kind of light setup they did.

I know it sort of mad replying to a post with first something that doesn't work but Neat Video is indeed a really excellent de-noise app but as Glenn says no Avid version.
They support just about every other NLE there is so maybe email them and suggest an Avid version.
I spoke to them a while ago about this and they said if enough people asked they would look into it.

So hopefully if enough people request it they will, and Avid users can benefit from it as well as everyone else.

http://www.neatvideo.com (don't be fooled by the clunky website its a great plug-in.)

Magic Bullet do a de-noise plug-in http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/products/all/denoiser-II/

However I have not tried it so can't say how good it is but there is a free trial. Might be worth a look

best wishes

Just to piggy back on this thread -- I am a recent convert from FCP to Avid and one of the things I'm really missing is my Neat Video plugin. Does anyone have a good workflow for cutting and finishing in Media Composer, but sending consolidated media over to FCP (with edits in tact) to do a noise reduction pass?

I have Automatic Duck and haven't yet tested using it to import an AAF with consolidated media -- but I'm thinking this might be the way to go? Any ideas are appreciated!

Best,
JD

Just to let anyone who comes across this thread know, Neat has recently added native support of Avid: http://www.neatvideo.com/news.html#Neat-Video-v3-4-2013-7-25
