Marrying audio to video to act like a master clip
on Dec 14, 2012 at 5:05:39 am

I just wrapped a job where we had issues with the scratch audio track fed to the camera. The director would really like scratch audio during our fairly quick post-schedule.

We shot on a RED Epic and created MXF files with no audio hoping we could figure out a fix later on. This means there isn't a simple overwrite/replace of the audio mxf tracks

- Video only MXF files already exist. We do not want to reprocess these in any way if possible.

- In Redcine-X I can sync production audio to the video using the slate. I can then export audio only MXF. For those not acquainted with Redcine-X (RED's footage handling program) this allows us to have audio tracks the same length and striped with the exact same timecode as the camera video. It also creates a very similar named MXF file to the video MXF (the later part of the file name looks like random characters)

- How can I rename/ingest this audio so it acts like a Master Clip with the video? I would prefer to avoid the editor and director having to create subclips to marry the audio.

- Redcine-X will not regenerate AAF files on-demand but it will do ALE which doesn't seem like any advantage in this situation.

- I won't have access to the Video MXF as they are loaded into the editing bay.

- I use Windows so I have access to Metafuse if that's on any help.

Anyone have some insight as to what we can do? I'm using Media Composer 6 for Windows and they're on MC5 or 6 on Mac.

While I'm not in love with the fact this creates extra bins (I was hoping the result could be more transparent, but auto sync is easy enough), do subclips work flawlessly with multicam? I only have a very rudimentary knowledge of MC.

Multicam works with master clips or subclips, or subclips created via AutoSync, etc.
