Embedded Timecode in Quicktime File
on Nov 1, 2012 at 12:40:12 am

Does anyone know how to change the starting timecode in a quicktime file that has been exported from Media Composer? In the Avid, our starting timecode reflects our reel number; Hour 1, hour 2 ,hour 3, and so on but the timecode embedded in the exported quicktimes all begin at hour 1. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help.

Are these sequences or source clips? QTChange from VideoToolShed can do that for you if needed, but Media Composer is supposed to persist the timecode of the source clip or the timeline record side for sequences when exporting. What version are you on?

Hi Michael,

Im on 6.0.3.

Here is a screenshot where you can see the timecode burn in from the avid which represents the what the Avid "sees" and the QT Player Move Inspector window which tells us what QT "sees" - Starting timecode is hour zero.

It may be an issue with QuickTime Player. I exported from Media Composer with a 13:00:00:00 timecode and opened it in ProPlayer and MetaCheater and both see the timecode correctly - just not QuickTime Player.

Curious; What version of Media Composer did you export from?

I did my export with v6.5. But I suspect it's the same with 6 and 6.0.3. Open your file in MetaCheater: metacheater.mac.informer.com/download/

Or try AMA'ing to it and see if it sees a timecode.

If you click on the timecode display in quicktime player you can change how the timecode is displayed. You need to change it to non drop frame and then the correct timecode will be displayed.

Best
