AVID RED R3D workflow

Hi,
I am editing raw native R3D files in Avid MC 6 and am wondering if I should color grade in Avid with its own built-in coloring system or send it other grading software.

I usually transcode from Redcine to prorez to Finalcut and then to Apple color and back.
Avid seems to have a pretty good coloring system but not sure if its as robust as Apple color.

Color Grade natively?

I preferred to opt out of color correcting and transcoding from Redcine X to edit natively.

What is the best workflow in terms of color grading natively edited R3D files in AVID?

Thanks

Israel

Best option from Avid is Resolve. The color tools in Avid are fine for "onlining" and making legal, with minor tweeks. But it is by no means "grading" software like Color or Resolve.

Great! I saw lot of positive reviews on resolve which on few cases were compared to symphony.
That had me pondering in between the two as well.
Wonder if it pays to learn symphony or just get set with resolve for the long haul.

Thanks for the Shane!

Its very hard to find one.

You might look at Adobe's SpeedGrade as well. I've been playing with it, and it's kinda cool. I'm not a colorist, so your mileage may vary. But Adobe is definitely pushing it as a professional grading application. And it comes included with a "cloud" subscription of $50/month.

It was really easy to export an EDL from Avid, then open that EDL in SpeedGrade and link it to the RedRaw files for grading. Took about 10 seconds to figure it out.

Not free...

Even if you go to Lynda.com, that's a pay site. Gotta pay for training.

Thanks..I would be happy to pay but another question lingers...if I should go with resolve or speed grade which I prob will have to create a new post.
Would be great if there are any seasoned colorist's views here.
Thanks
