A way to transcode to Avid DNxHD without avid MC?
on Mar 13, 2012 at 11:04:44 pm

I want to take a bunch of quicktime footage (from HVX, 7D, GoPro, etc) and transcode it to Avid DNxHD 175x. The problem is I don't have an avid available. I like how Red Cine X does it for Red files and was wondering if there was a cheap or free program that did it for other flavors of video? Anyone? Thanks

David

All you need to do is download the Avid codecs....

when i do that, i still have to "import" the file into avid. With the Red Cine program, i just put the mxf files into the mxf folder and they link up. do you concur?

Sorry, I don't know the Red Cine program, and if it makes MXF files or QT files in the DNxHD format.

If you want to make Avid MXF files, you can use Resolve Lite. It's free.

Although it's quick to just drop externally made MXF files into the Avid mediaFiles MXF folders just be aware that the media has no project metatdata so the Avids Media tool will fail to see that media associated with any Avid project making the use of the media tool less helpful.
The prefered method is to AMA and then Transcode to make the Avid media. But you need MC of course.
Also there's a need trick (unsupported) to get all the clips from a bunch of MXF files into a bin.
After you drop the new MXF files, externally created, into the Avid mediaFiles folder and let MC launch and scan them (to build the databases) at explorer/finder level find the file in that foldr Avid will have created called msmMMOB.mdb and drag and drop it into an empty Avid bin inside MC while it's running and it will be populated with all the clips in that MXF folder.

This is interesting.

Am I right in thinking that externally created avid HDxND files (say from resolve lite) would fast import.

Yes they should. But I'd just AMA to them. No need to make yet more media!

If you're making MXF files in Resolve, there is no "import." Put them in the right place (Avid MediaFiles/MXF/numbered folder), let Avid scan the drive, and drag the .mdb file into a new bin. It's only if you make DNx encoded Quicktime movies that you need to go through an import process.

it says, "Remember that Avid MXF support is an extra purchase for Resolve in the Avid File Support option."

That is no longer the case and hasn't been the case for at least 6 months. As of version 8.1 (Resolve is now at 8.2) Avid MXF support is included in the base product, as well as the free Lite version.

Have you tried Metafuze? PC only but creates mxf files and an ALE.

The recently released version of Sorenson squeeze 8 Pro can do just this. it can create the properly formatted avid DNxHD.MXF files that you can drop right into the avid media files folder.

I wrote a blog post about this very thing just the other day.

David! How's it going, man? Long time, no see. Scot's suggestion sounds pretty good to me. But you guys do have an Avid over there, right? Just don't want to tie it up with transcoding?
