How to convert AVin video format
on Feb 28, 2012 at 4:51:14 pm

I was given a QuickTime video file in the AVin format and was told it was some sort of Avid codec. It doesn't play in QuickTime or VLC and won't open in Final Cut or Premiere. I don't have an Avid system and need to be able to convert it so I can edit it in either Final Cut or Premiere. Google has very little on this particular format, so I was hoping someone here might have some insight.

Thoughts?

Have you tried installing the free avid codecs pack?

Yes I did. No luck.

I may have to contact someone I know who has Avid, but I was hoping to do it in-house.

Never heard of AVin. Are you sure someone didn't change the extension? Is it an AVI file?

If you downloaded and installed the Avid codecs, contacting someone with an Avid system isn't going to get you any further.

The file extension is .MOV. I'm assuming it is the codec that is AVin.

When I open the file in the QuickTime player, the audio will play and the inspector says the format is "AVin," as does the "Get info" button in the Finder.

My bad. That's an Avid AVC-Intra codec. I found this link to a set of Avid codecs that may help. http://codecs.org.ua/codecs_en.html - Search for "avin" since there is a lot on that page.

Hope that helps.

This solution did not work for me. Did you ever find a workaround Ed? Or anyone else?
Thanks

HI Daniel
Wondering if you had any luck with getting those AVin Quicktime files to open. I can get the files to open on a PC but not on my Mac (even after downloading avids codecs from their website).
Any advice appreciated!

Cheers

Chris

Never figured it out unfortunately. It was archive footage, so I was able to move on without it. Good luck. Let us know if you figure anything out.

Figured it out.
Download the 30 day free trial for Avid media composer, within the download is a codec pack that works just fine. You can open these files in any program once you've downloaded media composer, I imagine the codec will work after the 30 day trial elapses too.
