linking old mxf media to new empty project / making new master clips
on Feb 17, 2012 at 10:24:13 pm

Hello
I have a lot of mxf media which no longer has its associated project files. I wish to create new master clips within a new project to link to this media but can't see how to do it. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

What happens if you close MC, put the MXF files into the Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1 (or 2, 3, etc) folder, delete all of the database files, relaunch Avid, and use the media tool. Can you see them then?

So long as the MXF files are in the correct place (root/Avid MediaFiles/MXF/(number)) then you can just import the MDB file from the folder they are in, and they will all show up in the bin.

Thanks.

This is what I ended up doing - finding that .MDB file and importing it into a New Project bin. (I also tried deleting it and found that Avid automatically recreates it when you restart MC. Useful to know.

Not sure if this should be a new thread: I am going to be importing existing projects together with their media to cut something new in a new project. Does all the media from those projects have to be put together in 'Avid MediaFiles / MXF / 1' or can I keep the media files for each of the old projects separate in, say, 1,2, & 3 etc. (for house-keeping purposes) and still access it all within my new project? How would that work?

put the mxf files into an appropriate directory, (volume)/Avid Mediafiles/MXF/1. Launch Media Composer and let it rebuild the database files. Make a new bin in the project. Then do one of the following....

1) from the finder drag the media database file, the .mdb file, and drop it into the bin. It will create master clips of the media that .mdb file refers to. In other words all the media in that one folder.

2) under Tools, go to Media Tool. Scan that drive and all projects. It will create a bin with all the media from that drive. Then select the clips you want and drag them over to the new bin you had created.
