10-bit not working? MC 5.5, OSX

Hi!

I got some 10-bit footage from a Ki Pro (ProRes HQ) and decided to try out a workflow including some CC. I used AMA at first, dropped that into the timeline and tried switching the quality to 10-bit without success. There's the regular yellow, the green-yellow 50/50 and full green. But no full green with the number 10 in it. So I tried to import instead to different formats: DNxHD 185x, 1:1, 1:1 10-bit without success. Same thing with consolidate/transcode.

I'm on Media Composer 5.5.3, OSX 10.6.8.

Weird... Cause I've seen the green 10-bit icon a couple of times on software only...

Does MC preserve the 10-bit when importing and exporting without it? Let's say: AMA Prores in, Prores out? Or fast import DNxHD 185X and the same out? (I usually AMA and consolidate. Too much fiddling around with setting to get a fast import with all the different formats)

[Hampus Lager] "Weird... Cause I've seen the green 10-bit icon a couple of times on software only..."

are you sure the copies were legit?

it is possible the manual is outdated.

anyway, this is only a playback option.

i believe if you AMA or fast import with 10 bit formats, it is preserved when you go back out to a 10 bit format. not sure what filters and effects do and how they mess with it.

BTW... on a MAC, with version 6, you can fast import ProRes files to PR MXF.

yes, it's legit. my boss wasn't happy when I said we're going with avid when he saw the price tag xD try to explain to a music producer who wants to get into the film and television business that final cut x is not okay :P

I guess I have to find out about 10-bit more. It would be really bad if it imported 10-bit as 8-bit and then exported an upsampled image. In the media creation settings I'm able to specify effects processing to 8 or 16-bit. Or same as source.

I know about MC6, we're just not updating yet. Too many bugs and I'm not a fan of Lion. But I look forward to 64-bit and being able to use our Decklink from Black Magic.

Thanks for your time, Hector!

yes, some effects process in 16 bit others only in 8
its mentioned in the help file which are what

i believe the 16 ones will maintain your 10 bit

and MC software does work and supports 10 bit, in and out.

(i'm starting to doubt the IO only 10 bit playback thing myself...)

i'll investigate it a bit and write more.

I'm pretty sure this is the case. I've never seen the Full Quality 10-Bit mode available without at least a Mojo SDI. If you're working file based, it shouldn't matter (Except when you do full screen monitoring). If you were running out to a BOB and off to tape, then it would be important.
