Looking to BUY Mac Pro, RAM, AJA LHi, Production Monitor, Speakers, Keyboards...
on Dec 14, 2011 at 12:51:36 am

I'm looking to do some buying starting on Friday, 12/16/11 and ending on 12/31/11.

Specifically, I am looking to buy new/newer equipment to replace in my older edit suite in order to best run Final Cut Studio 3, Adobe Production Premium CS5.5 and Avid Media Composer 6. I already own all of these titles plus some other software and equipment that I can re-use.

Here is what I am looking to buy:
- Mac Pro 8-core (2010)
- Mac Pro 8-core (2010) RAM (12gb to 32gb)
- AJA LHi (for HD use with UVW-1800 Beta-SP and all three software)
- G-Tech ES Pro (8tb) with Atto R680 Mini-SAS card
- eSata card
- Sony LMD-2110W HDMI & analog production monitor
- Genelic 8020A speakers
- Avid keyboard
- Premier keyboard

Since I'm buying all of these out of my own pocket, of course I'm looking for the best prices and would even consider used or other pieces of equipment.

Any buying advice at all is greatly appreciated - thank you!

I would look for an Avid reseller in your area, or as close as possible. Typically and Avid reseller will have experience with these 3rd party products. I am with a reseller, but this board is more for issues, and not sales.

However, upon looking at your config it looks like you are on the right track. I would add the Nvidia Quadro 4000 for Mac. It uses Cuda acceleration that would be beneficial when using after effects. Buy the mac corded mouse, or a trackball or pad of your choice. Many of my clients dislike the bluetooth mouse.

In order to do proper deck control, Avid recommends the Tripp Lite USB to serial adapter - for Mac, and add the 232 to 422 adapter from Addenda for proper deck control. Theoretically the AJA 422 port would work, but supposedly it is not as accurate. Timecode accuracy is worth $100 of bits.

Put a small mixer or volume control in line to control your speakers up or down. A Mackie 1202 is a quick fix.

Finally buy a nice chair, you will be sitting there long enough, a nice chair will make your life better.
