Connecting to HDCAM SR deck

Okayyyy....getting along here so far. But now...Setting up Deck Control. I have the Sony SRW-5800 HDCAM SR deck...it is not listed in the Deck Config. I chose 5500 but that didn't work. And autoconfigure comes up blank...says NO DECK.

Which should I chose that is closest?

Hmm. The 5500 should work. What didn't work for you? Are you sure the deck remote configuration is correct on the 5800? There are several remote connectors on the back and you have to be in the one that is proeprly enable.

I tried that one...and SRW-5000. I can see the video, and 8 channels of embedded audio via HD SDI, and I can capture with deck control turned off. But I can't see the deck. I am connected to the same port that I use this deck on with the FCP/Kona system.

I check AUTO CONFIGURE and it gets rid of that setting and the deck area is blank.

SO CLOSE!

Okay, so the port is correct on the deck. How are you using the deck control on the computer? Is this the PC or Mac? Are you using a Keyspan?

I have the Keyspan adapter, and an RS-422 cable that is female on one end, and male on the other. I use the DIRECT option in the Deck Config, and it sees the Keyspan.

Hmmm...I think I'll try another Serial Cable. Lemme do that tomorrow.

Thanks Terry.

Couple of things. First, you need to have the LATEST Keyspan drivers.

Second, some Keyspans have issues with newer system software.

Check this thread to see if it helps at all:

Updated latest drivers. Nothing. Swapped out with cables we had in house. Nothing. I might head to Radio Shack to get a Female to female RS-422 adapter so that I can attach the RS422 cable I am using with the KONA to it...because I know what works.

If you have the Kona card in there also, you can select the Kona deck control in the Avid deck configuration. Weird I know but Greg Huson uses it all the time.

WAIT? Really? I didn't load the Kona drivers because I didn't want it to conflict with anything Avid. Are you telling me that Greg installed the Kona drivers and it works?

I might have to try this. Clone the drive first, then install the drivers. And Deck Config see that? Can you point him to this thread? Or is he on the FCP_L? I recall that name...I'll post my question there for him.

Thanks,

Shane

Just sent you his contact info offlist.

Yes, he runs both FCP and Avid on the same drive. He is also crazier than I am....

The trap is you can never update FCP and OSX past wherever MC is supported.

Not crazy. I set up two systems to do this, never had a problem. It was, in fact, much simpler in part because the Kona port was much more reliable, and in part because it meant that the system only needed one connection to a control router regardless of what it was running.

KONA SERIAL! Installed Kona drivers...Kona Serial shows up. Able to control the deck.

Terry, you rock! Thanks man.
