Where are the best hotel deals found.
on Mar 8, 2007 at 3:51:53 am

This is my first year going to NAB and I was wondering where the best strip hotel deals where found, thought the NAB website or one of the online travel sites?

The best deals are through the NAB site. We're frequent Vegas visitors, and even the players card/special deal prices we're getting are much higher than the block rates from NAB.

My play every year, and it's not for everyone, is to get a $50 hotel room downtown, a $25 rent car, and park at Riviera (free) and take shuttle or hoof it. I didn't call around much, but I found $50 rooms at Las Vegas Club and Binions. There might be others. The rooms all get dark at night.

[Jack McGee] "The rooms all get dark at night"

Sometimes, they don't -- sometimes that's when the action starts!

Back when Ron and I first started going to NAB, we made the mistake of thinking there would be plenty of rooms available and we didn't make a reservation. We finally found a vacant room, checked in and the room had been in use -- people jumped out the back window while we unlocked the door to go in. Needless to say, we left that place and felt lucky to find something else -- a bridal suite with mirrors on the ceiling and walls, but it also had a giant jacuzzi right next to the bed.

Another time, years ago, I checked into a cheap hotel. The desk clerk looked at me rather strangely. I settled in only to discover, the night was just beginning.Knocks on the doors surrounding my room about every 20 minutes let me know exactly why the desk clerk looked at me so oddly.

So, make sure the sheets are clean and the locks work.

Oh, and if you're renting a car anyway, there's always Stateline. You can get rooms there for as little as $19.95-- they're clean, fairly quiet and about a 20 minute drive in to Las Vegas.

Just checked with the website for the Primm Hotel and Casino, and I guess prices have gone up. It's now listed at $31.95 and up. So, not that good of a deal because you'd still have the drive time.

Well, I should have qualified, rooms all get dark at night in the hotel/casinos downtown and the strip. One possible exception would be the Western. I've stayed in all but one or two of the downtown hotels, and all of the strip hotels built before about 1995, and they are all about the same to me. Certainly there is a big difference between a room at the Venetian and a room at the Las Vegas Club but... they all get dark at night.

I,m staying at the Gold Coast. Booked it through the NAB site. It offers a free shuttle to the strip and the free shuttle to the convention center. Price is excellent. It is one mile off strip, so not a bad walk. from what I can read, it is a decent hotel with good eats.

Last year I stayed at the Stardust....they just knocked it down.....I hope it wasn't my fault :-)

Ron,

Yes, I am quite excited....I just hope that they will fit my freakishly large feet. Imagine, I am 5'7 and wear 11 or 12....Let's just say that I have great balance...it also helped me score a lot of goals in soccer last year, basically I just have to stick out my leg and let my freak-feet do the rest.

Mark ;-)

You and I get the duty, well, er, um -- well, shoveling doo-tey around the farm. :o)

No. Kathlyn didn't like my idea of real cows at the show. :)

Kathlyn is handling the schedule and will be contacting you.

Best,

Ron

Kathlyn and I had pretty much agreed (or at least I hope) that I would be at the booth on tuesday morning. Monday I can't do the duty, and because I am leaving wednesday morning, I would like to keep tuesday afternoon free to run around see all the things that I didn't get a chance to see yet.

I've got you, Mark, down for Tuesday morning. Walter is working Tuesday afternoon. So far, everything else is open.

Aanarav if you want to pick out your time, write me and let me know which slot you'd like.

I've ordered 8 pairs of cow slippers, so that's a total of 8 slots available. If anyone reading this would like to go on the list to help out in the cow booth and earn a pair of fuzzy cow slippers, write me.

If you are flying into Vegas, consider going on Southwest Airlines, because on their website they have "vacation" packages combining airfare & hotel, which really can cut down the overall cost.

I figure a room costing $80-100 in Vegas is a pretty good deal. The last few years I stayed at the Comfort Inn on Paradise Rd. by UNLV. It had a king bed, microwave, fridge and free shuttle to LVCC. Now it's $119 :-(
This year it's the Best Western on Paradise a block from LVCC and walking is good for me. To get to the strip the free NAB shuttle is great.

I don't know if it's a big secret but a good affordable meal is at Terrible's Casino at Flamingo and Paradise in the Bouganvillea Cafe. 16 oz. prime rib or 12 oz. steak for $9.99. Comes with veggies and potato and the steak with a glass of wine. I always feel like it's so cheap the waiters are shorted so I tip a little heavy. One year I met another editor eating solo so we ate together and had a good conversation. Naturally, you have to go through the dark smoky casino to get to the elevator, but its worth it.

Another sleeper steak deal is available 24x7 at Ellis Island, steak, baked potato and other stuff for $5. Not on menu, you have to ask. For me, took the place of the late night $2 deal at Horseshoe.
