Spinning Discovery Channel like Globe
on Sep 17, 2008 at 6:49:53 pm

I've got two primitives created, one slightly larger than the next (both are spheres). The larger sphere has a cloud texture mapped to it, with it's blending mode set to screen so that it looks like real clouds. The smaller sphere on the inside has the Earth mapped to it. I'm new to Invigorator so I'm confused as to how you spin the two primitives in 3d space. I want them to spin slightly different, to look similar to the Discovery Channel logo.
Look here to see what I mean:

Small tutorial inside!

Hi Brad,

Actually you don't need two spheres for that. You could simply animate your clouds on top of your Earth Map and use the layer mapping technique to texture your sphere. I am testing some hardware software for new tutorials so I created this petit tutorial for you:

The result should look like this:

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for responding to this. I appreciate the movies. What I was trying to do though is have the clouds up on a separate layer like in the real world, so you'd see an atmosphere above the Earth.
I'll keep trying. Feel free to play some more and send me another movie, I'd love to see what yoou come up with.

Hi Brad,

Unless you are not showing the entire globe, I will not advise you to use a second sphere for the clouds as it will look fake and abnormal. Have a look at the example you provided or any earth picture and you will see that the clouds are never surrounding the earth outside of the atmosphere.

If you still want to do so, follow these steps:

- Duplicate the earth comp in your project window.

- Delete the earth image and add a black solid layer under the clouds layer.

- Place this new comp in the main one and assign it as a layer map.

- In the Set-Up window create a second sphere make it bigger then the first one and apply Map #2 as a texture map as well as a Transparency Map. Done!

Salut.
Serge
