transparency map in proanimator
on Nov 25, 2007 at 8:20:47 pm

im running into a bit of an issue with a logo im making in proanimator (ill shorten it to PA). you can see the logo at vbfaonline.com, its the ovular shape with the cross cut out. i have a good version of it i have been using but its not quite what it needs to be. i want it to be very round and egg like rather than just a logo thats got depth. problem is when i use a custom edge to make the roundness i need then it also does the samething to the edge of the cross cut out. i thought using a transparency map to cut it out, like what was done in the gold crown tutorial, would work but that was done within AE and im just using PA in standalone mode so i cant add an effect to do that the same way. please advise.

Hi Ryan,

You can do the same thing in the stand-alone version. Just create the black and white transparency map in photoshop, save it as a tga and choose the image in the transparency channel in the material editor.

The real challenge for you may be getting the cross shape to look right. To help you, we're going to need more detail on how you made the egg shape. Does it have a flat front face with a custom bevel, or is it just a bevel applied to a very small circle? The answer will determine what kind of image map you'll need to make. If you're using and edge and a face, you'll need one transparency map for the face and another for the edge, to make the cut-out complete.

Does this help?

Jon

the logo is more of a flat shape with very round edges, not so much an egg really. if i use the transparency method will the inner edges be solid or will you be able to see the backsides of the front and back faces, does that question make sense?

Hi,

I responded to this post an hour ago but something must have gone wrong.

Here is an example for you on how your transparency map could look like in case you decide to to go for the egg form:
http://www.nyc-visual.com/Holy_Egg.zip

You will find an ZXO object and the necessary maps in the zip.

It is easier to create such kind of maps in PA for AE as the layer-mapping technique gives you more control.

Going back and forth between PS & PA may take for ever! Especially when you are dealing with a spherical map.

Looks like this:

wow, thats basically what i wanted to do. to apply the transparency map i thought that i just clicked on the swatch next to the transparency slider and chose the correct jpg but apparently thats not it. what is the method you use to determine how to make the map, obviously it is cut down the center along some calculated line, or are you just doing trial and error until it falls correctly?

Hi,

I don't really understand what is going wrong. You should be able to load the transparency map without any problem. I apologize if I am stating the obvious here, but did you drag and drop your material on your "Selected" object in the scene preview window or in the material palette?

Shoot me an e-mail with your project at (serge at nyc-visual dot com)

As to how I created the map, I simply used the layer mapping technique that allows me (when using a two comp view) to draw my map in one comp and see the result taking effect on my object in the second comp view.

I explained in details many different tricks on how you can perfectly map an object in IP/PA in the training DVD but generally you have to understand that objects (Depending on their form) have different mapping coordinates (Spherical, Cylindrical,Planar etc...) and understanding how Invigorator/PA maps the faces and edge of an object is as important. Make a search in this forum and you will find many tips on mapping;-)

Salut,
Serge
