Why is 3d layer warp so sloooooow
on Aug 24, 2007 at 2:03:36 am

I just bought 3dLayer Warp and am using it on a Quad Pro Mac with 9 gigs of RAM and AE 8.01. I have turned off OpenGL because I was bombing immediately and constantly with it enabled.

What I am doing is very simple:
I am warping a nested comp that has one layer--an arrow shape.

But this is sloooooooooooowww. So slow it's almost unusable. Can I get a little clarification of what to expect. Invigorator seems much faster than this and in my limited thinking I would sure think that Invig is doing more heavy lifting.

Is something amiss?

If you'd like to send me file I can test it on my system and see if I have the same problem.

It's a VERY simple file but sure.

I played around with it again just now and perhaps I overstate the case, but for such a relatively simple build I thought it was quite sluggish.

uh...ok...can I attach a file or can I only submit a link?

Hi Craig.

I'm sure you're in good hands with John,
but I wouldn't mind checking out the file
as well: matt@zaxwerks.com.

Depending on how you're using it, 3D Layer Warp
should be fairly fast. I'm curious to see
if you're using Draft or Best quality for the warped layer.

Also, I'm not sure how you're turning off OpenGL and
what is bombing when it is on.

Let's get you up and running.

Matt,

I was hot and heavy in a project and after four or five crashes and one corrupt file it didn't take me long to turn off AE's Open GL.

(Latest Mac OS, Quad Core Intel Mac, 9 gigs RAM, AE 8.01)

To be clear those crashes had nothing to do with Layer Warp.

I would be hard pressed to be real specific except to say that I do know I was using some of the Boris Continuum 5 filters that are Open GL intense when I crashed.

I didn't set the layer to draft when doing my layer warp work but I did set comp resolution to half some of the time. I guess given my platform specs I just expected better performance. Perhaps I am spoiled by Invigorator and other fast effects.

I guess what I was expecting was something similar in speed to CCSphere or a Boris DVE filter.

I guess what layer warp does is more complex but it seems radically slower than those filters...frankly it seems radically slower than Invigorator.

Hi Craig.

Thanks for the feedback.

3D Layer Warp and 3D Grid Warp use the same renderer as the Invigorator.

There are a lot of factors that can affect the speed of a render, including:
- The size of the 3D object/layer on screen
- Whether or not there is transparency
- Whether or not there are line or grid effects

I took a look at the file and it didn't seem overly slow...
