3D Warps Announcement
on Apr 27, 2007 at 9:33:43 pm

Thanks to everyone who dropped by the Zaxwerks booth and said Hi during NAB. It's great to see the faces and hear how you are using the software. With all of the ruckus surrounding NAB, I forgot to post the following announcement.

Zaxwerks releases a new set of plug-ins for After Effects. It's called 3D Warps and is a set of two plug-ins that give designers great flexibility to create graphics that were unavailable to them before.

3D Warps enables you to bend, twist and otherwise mistreat your AE layers in three dimensions. 3D Warps consists of two plug-ins, 3D Layer Warp and 3D Grid Warp.

3D Layer Warp is made to warp your AE layers. You can bend your backgrounds, do page curls, twist reveals, peel images off walls, wrap them up into spheres, create vortex tubes and even do water drop ripples on the surface of your images. Many other warp styles are included and you can stack them to create effects we haven't even thought of.

Special features include using different images for the backsides of the surface; reflection mapping for chrome and glass effects; rendering without shading for doing 3-D warps to 2-D graphics; motion blur; clipping planes; a shadow-catcher plane; links to the comp cameras and lights; wireframe, hiddenline, shaded and shaded-with-lines rendering styles.

Layers can be stills, movies, text or complete comps. Alpha channels can be used to control the cut-out of the warped surface, including a different alpha for the backside. Displacement mapping is also supported so you can use pictures to control the shape of the warp.

3D Grid Warp is designed to create lines and patterns that will flow over the face of the warped surface. The warping features are the same as in Layer Warp (except no displacement mapping). The big difference with this plug-in is that it has controls for creating lines and grids which can be made to flow and rotate over the surface. This is a great way to create looping line elements such as falling ribbons, curved grids and contour strips for backgrounds.

The list of things you can do with these plug-ins just goes on and on. It's shipping right now and appears to be rock solid for production. We demoed it continually for four days at NAB, alternating between the Warps, Layer Tools, ProAnimator inside AE 7 and CS3, without a single crash.
