Import as 16-235 or 0-255...?
on Jul 13, 2017 at 2:52:27 am

Hello, I've asked about importing footage as 16-235 or 0-255 on the Facebook group, and am still not entirely satisfied, so am wondering, given you're often more technically aware Floh, if you had a definitive answer, (or if I need to quiz Sony to figure out what the PMW 200 is shooting)...

...filmed footage on a Sony PMW 200 in XDCAM EX:
Codec - MPEG-2 Long GOP,
Color Sampling - YCbCr 4:2:0 8bit,
Bitrate - 35Mbps,
Frame Size - 1280x720,
Frame rate - 29.97fps,
Field Order - Progressive.

....although my final output will be Youtube (so it'll end up 0-255 I presume), do I bring that footage into Media 100 and work with it as 16-235 in the file import settings? And only worry about 0-255 during the final transcode to H264 for Youtube? Or should I bring it in as 0-255?
Does MPEG-2 Long GOP YCbCr 4:2:0 8bit, mean it has recorded as 16-235?
I read on wikipedia that:
"For example, the scaling and offset applied to the Y′ component per specification (e.g. MPEG-2[1]) results in the value of 16 for black and the value of 235 for white when using an 8-bit representation."

The settings above are from Catalyst Browse. I am going through the rewrap preset on Edit Ready before bringing into Media 100.

XDCam HD/EX codecs are set up to use the 16-235 colourspace. If you do a "manual" import into Media 100, you should treat the footage as being in this colorspace.

On export, you should chose a colorspace that matches your codec. ProRes and most delivery codecs like H264/MPEG4 use the full 0-255 Colorspace. If you do an export e.g. to ProRes, you should export into the Full Range space.

Thank you for this advice, Floh.

At the moment, I use Edit Ready's rewrap preset, to turn the BPAV folder of mp4 files, into Quicktime mov files Media 100 can work with,
then I import to Media 100 via File->Import->Files...
...is that what you dub a "manual" import?

In the Import dialogue box that ensues, I set the color range import option to 16-235.
Is this what you mean I should do, by treating the footage as in that colourspace?

My Media 100 project codec settings are set to Pro Res 422, and so on import, it is importing to the ProRes codec.

I assume that means, on export, my material is already 0-255, and I can go ahead and convert my by reference exported mov, to H264 with no worries? [I use Compressor 4.1.3 and don't really see a colour range setting - I just use High profile, and CABAC Entropy Mode - whatever these things are, ^_^, as per google's recommended settings].

I know you're busy.
Many thanks for your time, =).
