Aspect Ratio

We created 3 VR360 videos for a client. They say that the "aspect ratio is not correct" How can that be? We created 1080P files. Thoughts?

Greg, apologies in advance for sounding pedantic, but VR and 360 video are two really different things. Here are a couple quick explanations of the two terms:

What are the specific deliverable requirements you have? And what specifically did you deliver?

Equirectangular projection with a 2:1 aspect ratio is a pretty common requirement for monoscopic 360-degree video.

Walter, no need to apologize. I appreciate the help. This is a 360 video animation of the inside of an elevator cab.

I have no idea what" Equirectangular projection with a 2:1 aspect ratio is" or "monoscopic 360-degree video".

[Greg Ball] " have no idea what" Equirectangular projection with a 2:1 aspect ratio is" or "monoscopic 360-degree video"."

Equirectangular projection, 2:1 aspect ratio: 360 videos are like big spheres that surround the viewer. Since video rasters are rectangular, we need a way to map between that sphere's surface and that rectangle. Imagine a globe with latitude and longitude. Equirectangular mapping maps latitude and longitude to straight and equal horizontal and vertical lines.

The video should be twice as wide as it is tall, and it should look something like these photos (when you view it outside of a VR player). You get more and more distortion as you go out from the center to the top and bottom of the rectangular raster, which map to the poles of the sphere:

Monoscopic 360-degree video: Video that goes 360 degrees around you, but for one eye only. Contrast with stereoscopic 360-degree video, which appears 3D and 360 degrees. (You have to halve the total possible resolution to squeeze both eye views into the same raster.)

Resolutions: You'll commonly see 1920x960 or 3840x1920 for monoscopic 360 video; if you're doing stereoscopic, you normally position the two views over/under, and you'll see 1920x1920, 2880x2880, 4096x2304 (anamorphic), or sometimes 4096x4096 (non-standard) rasters.

I can't send you videos since these are proprietary. These are 360s of the inside of an elevator. Using Samsung VR glasses and phone. All done with 3d animation. where the person wearing the goggles can look up, down, and all around to see every aspect of the elevator.

Ok and how did you export them- using which tool and with which settings?

Noah, I hired a company to create these. They used Occulus, and are exported to YouTube.

Ok well without knowing the settings used or seeing a clip to diagnose we can't do much to help you.

Noah, I wasn't looking for someone to diagnose the video. I was simply asking if the samsung 360s require a certain aspect ratio. Thanks abyway.

360 is generally encoded into typical resolutions like 1080/UHD/4K but as equirectangular/stereoscopic etc otherwise it will not playback properly to headsets/mobile etc. So aspect ratio is less relevant than what tool created the clip and which output settings were used.
