There is a minor issue with audio playback where every once in a while (every 3 days or so of normal editing) you'll get distorted audio coming through your monitors. If you pause playback, wait a second or two, then resume it's good to go again.

Other than that, the card rocks! I always felt that Final Cut was not very responsive when using Firewire (ever try to find a cut point in a music track only to have FCP roll a few frames after you hit the space bar?) Once you start using the Kona card you should definitely notice that lag is gone. It is much more responsive.

Also, There tech support is great. And be sure to Check out the Kona thread on the COW too.

yes, the Kona cards have many problems. I will outline them below.

1) they are inexpensive. All of your competitors will own them.
2) they never break. This gives me very little income on service calls.
3) AJA has free support on the phone. This gives me little opportunity to charge for house call repairs.
4) they give you free software upgrades and updates. This prevents dealers from charging for upgrades.
5) they don't provide free clients with the purchase of an AJA Kona card. What kind of crap is this - you
spend all this money for a Kona card, and you THEN have to go out and find clients to make a living with it!
With some of the other cards, the clients just line up to work with you !
6) you need a MAC computer to run this card. If you spend over $1000 for a video product, why should you have to buy an expensive Apple computer to use it ? I've been trying to get my Kona to work in a MAC Quadra 950 for the past year, and I can't get it to work !

Let me know if you have any other questions.

[Bob Zelin] "yes, the Kona cards have many problems. I will outline them below. "

Bob
you forgot a couple of other issues the rest of us have.

7) When you call AJA for support you get a real engineer, but I would rather talk trains with the sales staff.
8) Kona cards never get hot enough to make espresso with, no matter how many times walter asks.
9) They always seem to work with whatever upgrade apple has for us, even if it breaks everything else.
10) The hardware is so fast, I never get to go for coffee during renders anymore.

Which is WHY we need the Espresso option built in!

Plus #11 - when something DOES go wrong, they inconveniently send you out a new card without pointing fingers at other vendors or waiting for you to send the old card to them!

This is very problematic as I can't blame my procrastination on the hardware. How am I supposed to get a day off from my clients?
