Kona LH vs. MPEG Streamclip getting M2T => DVC Pro HD

Taking delivery of 2 JVC HD200s (when available) and still deciding on the workflow.

Workflow 1

We would like to eliminate tape using the focus drives which would entail converting the M2T files to DVC Pro HD with the MPEG Streamclip software. We would then archive the M2T files on Blu Ray discs. Sounds great right? Any gotchas? As I understand it the timecode will NOT survive the conversion but as long as the process is repeatable I don't see the problem. I like this workflow because we would eliminate tape and purchasing the JVC deck would be unnecessary.

Workflow 2
Shoot on tape, purchase the JVC deck, and digitize DVC Pro HD via Kona LH. We can either digitize HD SDI with the Convergent Design box or just plain ol' Component HD (which may work better by eliminating the TC breaks inherint with the JVC codec). The fact is that I need to digitize the whole tape without TC breaks.

Well there is actually 3 workflows there but you get the picture (pun intended). I'm posting in the Kona forum becuase all editing will be performed using DVC Pro HD with the Kona LH.

Anyone done any testing regarding these issues?

In other words, to get HDV to DVC Pro HD...

Better to convert M2T via MPEG Streamclip

or

Digitize tape via Kona LH

[Justin Ferar] "Better to convert M2T via MPEG Streamclip"

slow and arduous, not real time,

[Justin Ferar] "Digitize tape via Kona LH"

Real Time ingest, repeatable, consistent.

Hi Gary,

I've heard others claim that the MPEG Streamclip conversions take about real time on a dual 2.5

Anyone with a different experience?

Justin
that is not my experience, and I personally have never preferred software conversion over the hardware based versions.
