Apple EFI Firmware Update 1.1 & Kona LHe conflict?
on Nov 17, 2006 at 7:49:31 pm

Has anyone out there running a MacPro with AJA card performed the Apple EFI firmware 1.1 update (Intel update) to find out there Kona LHe no longer works? Tried the card in every PCI slot in multiple 'Expansion Utility' lane settings with no sucess. Now the machine won't boot with the AJA installed. Until the dust settles a bit I wouldn't recommend performing the update. No one at Apple can tell me accurately what the update does. It's new as of 11/1/06. FYI to y'all.

Do you have the latest driver from AJA?

That will help. And Zap your PRAM when you restart.

after running the firmware you should have had the "expansion slot utility" open and you needed to set the card to the #2 config.

that utility is in SYSTEM > Library > Core Services > Expansion Slot Utility

choose option #2

reboot.

Thanks for the feedback guys. This is day 2 of troubleshooting...

In building this new system I installed all the latest drivers and updates, including the suspect EFI firmware update (10.4.8, FCP 5.1, Kona 3.2 drivers). In Expansion Slot Utility, tried option 1 (providing 8 lanes for added measure) & 2 (the suggested 4 lanes). Reset the PRAM. Installed the card in slots 2,3 (recommended) & 4.

Basically ran out of options. Only way the machine will boot is without the card. Running a SATA RAID controller which works fine (Highpoint-Tech RocketRAID 2320, so, know the slots are working anyway.

Ideas?

and what about starting without the sata card?
does it boot with the kona and no sata card?

I only recommend option 2 setting in the ESU.
the storage goes in slot 4
Kona goes into slot 3

leave slot 2 open.

No - doesn't start without the SATA card either. It's a mystery. Only put in the SATA card after trouble shooting everything I could with just the AJA.

SATA in 4, Kona tried in 3.Strange...

AJA's sending me a new card as a precaution.

So, turns out it was the Kona card. On the 3rd card from AJA, it works fine so far. For a while got the other cards to work by seating the card from back to front before start-up but had to do it on every shut-down.

Whatever the reasons were, problem solved.
