i have a project that i'm tendering for, shot on the Varicam. i'll have to online the project but before i commit i'd like some advice if that's ok.
a) to capture from this camera, is it a DVCPROHD codec i need
b) the deck i hire, will it have to be dual link SDI
c) so if the above is true do i need the Kona 3 card for thiis (sdi dual link)
D) with my kona LHE, would i be able to do an offline?
sorry for being dumb i dont know if the varicam is dual link or single link sdi

You have the option to capture DVCPro HD or uncompressed HD via the Kona LHe. If you capture DVCPro HD you can come in firewire. For uncompressed you come in HD-SDI.
[nick Franco]"b) the deck i hire, will it have to be dual link SDI"
Not even close. That's only HDCAM SR.

Yes, the Kona LHe can downconvert an HD-SDI signal to any codec during capture.
Based on your questions I'm assuming this is your first HD project. Know that we spent 6 months working out the HD workflow for Good Eats because HD is not necessarily something you can just jump in to. First off you need to have a true HD monitor like the Sony PMV20L5/1 or at least a Panasonic 1700W. Color Correction and frames rates are two of the many issues when working with your first HD project. You need to allocate time to do some test CC and outputs to ensure what you're doing looks good to both you and the client.
...and don't forget you may still need an HD waveform / vectorscope depending on what kind of project it is.
If it goes to TV, I will say you definately need one. If it goes to DVD or another medium you may get away without it, but
do I recommend it? No.
This doesn't mean you have to "buy" everything. Unless you are in a small town, you should be able to rent the necessary
equip. by the time you start the color correction, final render, mastering and finishing process. You are probably good
with whatever you have for the offline process. Do more reseacrh and figure out what you need.
