capture HDcam as DVCproHD 720?
on Oct 24, 2006 at 5:16:27 pm

Hi,

My system is currently down so I cant check this. (those damn planes flying into my building).

I assume it should be no problem to capture HDcam (to be incorporated into a 720P timeline)

to match Varicam material to play in the same timeline.

Thanks

The Kona 3 will do cross conversion, but I'm not sure about the framerate. What frame rate are you working in? If you are working 720p60, then I bet it would be easy. 720p24 might trip you up.

The Kona 2 does not cross convert.

You're right.... You can't cross-convert 720p23.93 Varicam from 1080p24 HDCAM. I've tried it. Compressor is the only option.

[Deadhead] "I assume it should be no problem to capture HDcam (to be incorporated into a 720P timeline)

Sorry! I've tried it and AJA can't convert frame rates.

720p23.98 Varicam is actually 720p59.94 video with a pulldown attached. SO.... 1080p24 will not convert to 720p23.98 Varicam thru the Kona 3. Kona 2 won't cross-convert at all, so you out of luck from the beginning if you have this one.

Supposedly, AJA says you can do this with FCP but they still haven't told me how to do this. I know you can convert each clip thru Compressor, but that is very tedious.

Wayne, supposedly this can be done (1080p23.98 to 720p23.98). I do not have the gear to test this myself, but the very latest version of the Kona 3 drivers do support this. You have to be eiditing in a 23.98 timeline though to achieve this.

Also, while the Varicam does record at 59.94p, it is possible to remove the pulldown on ingest and editing at 23.98.

To do the cross covert, it seems that all you need to do is select the proper easy setup.

From the Kona3 v3.2 release notes:

"New Easy setups:
- 720P 23.98 10 bit (to be used with 1080PsF 23.98 cross-conversion
function from KONA Control Panel application - KONA 3 only)

Note: these new 720P 23.98 Easy Setups should not be confused with the 720P
23.98 Varicam Easy Setups that are designed to capture 23.98fps from 59.94
Panasonic Varicam footage. "

Thanks, Jeremy.

I'm aware of that info BUT my problem is mixing 1080p23.98 with 720p23.98 Varicam (actually 59.94). We are editing at 23.98 in our sequences but the only way for the Kona 3 to monitor is to set it to 720p59.94. So.... when I go to capture 1080p23.98 to my project, I get an error message that says I can't mix timebases in my project. Now, my Sony machine will play this footage as 23.98 pull-down at 29.97, but I still get the error message. Have you done this?

This Panasonic stuff is still new to me.

If you are editing at 23.98 and you are cross converting your 1080p to 720p 23.98, then you should choose the aforementioned easy setup (except it should be 720p23.98 DVCPro HD not 10 bit like I quoted before), configure your Kona control panel for the proper conversions if need be, capture, then go back to your 720p23.98 Varicam easy setup to monitor. That way your 1080 material is now just like your varicam material, which is 720p23.98 DVCPRO HD. The pulldown for proper monitoring is added on playback, it's not in your media.

No, I have not done this particular conversion so I am speaking from theory rather then practice. I do know how to use the Kona Control Panel to get to and from other formats and have worked with Varicam material a bunch, but 1080p23.98 (and 2K & above) is the only format I haven't worked with so maybe my foot should be in my mouth. But I have a hunch you aren't setup correctly somewhere unless of course you are really editing at 60p then this becomes another matter.
