IBC 2011 => New firmware for the Ki Pro?
on Sep 5, 2011 at 8:29:24 pm

Will there be new firmware shown at IBC for the AJA KI Pro?

First of all, I really enjoy using both the AKA Ki Pro's & mini.
While using them for about 2 years now I have some features to request.
Many of them when I talked to support guys and people on IBC / NAB they say it's in the works / possible.
Here are my lists again:

My Top 3 feature-list for Ki Pro:
1- Keep recording even while signal gets lost. A must for ISO recording!
2- Activate the FireWire800 to be able to quickly copy footage without removing the AJA disks.
3- Fix the SMPTE out for 720p50 playback. The time-code in that format is unreadable by any other equipment. Even another AJA can't read that signal.

My Top 3 feature-list for KiPro Mini:
1- Auto switch between two cards while recording.
2- Audible beeps (in the Headphone output) when the Starts & Stops recording, memory cards are getting full and when a auto power-down happens. I did loose a lot of footage not having this in run-and-gun situations...
3- Option for on-screen HDMI/SDI data. To see when it is recording, how much storage is left etc... on the external reference monitor

Last but not least, a huge request for both the AJA products, if you could find a way to 'close' the recorded file while booting up again after a power failure. The JVC HD camera's do this automatically for example.
Now these files are just lost. Pretty scary in the digital world. On the old tape technology, only the last frame was lost in the past.

Thanks for looking into this.
Awaiting for some great new firmware!

What about make possible to jump between diferents "Scenes" or "Alpha Scenes" instead to jump by takes? Jump takes one by one to find a 3-days-after can be have a huge delay.

Hi Marc,

Just announced at IBC in Amsterdam is new v3 firmware for the Ki Pro, and Ki Pro Mini. This is the first unified release for both products, and also introduces many long-awaited and highly requested features to Ki Pro, along with some new surprises.

Here's a partial list of some of what you can expect to see in v3 for Ki Pro:

- RED One, RED Epic, and Canon XF SDI metadata support.
- LANC and lens tap ports enabled.
- 1080i/30 and 720p/60 support.
- "Super Out" timecode and transport status window-burn.
- Menu option to continue recording after a loss of video input.
- FireWire 800 file transfer.
- Redesigned webUI with new playlist support.
- ExpressCard slots enabled for up to 1080i ProRes SQ recording.

For Ki Pro Mini owners, here is a partial feature list for the new v3 firmware:

- LANC port enabled.
- "Super Out" timecode and transport status window-burn.
- Menu option to continue recording after a loss of video input.
- Redesigned webUI with new playlist support.
- HMDI timecode support for certain Sony cameras.

v3 firmware is a significant release for Ki Pro that is expected to ship next month as a free upgrade for all Ki Pro owners. We will post here on the Cow when v3 is ready to download, you can always find more information at http://www.aja.com. I also invite you to contact us at any time via email or phone if you have any questions.

I hope you will enjoy the new functionality v3 brings to Ki Pro.

Hi Mr. Rashby,

This just sounds great!
Honered that the president himself is answering.
Pitty I can't come to IBC this year to see it in action.

Thanks for informing and the work from your development team.

Wow AJA. I was waiting to see how 3.0 was before deciding on adding a third KiPro to our kit, or trying out the Sounddevices Pix 240. I guess I'll just go for the Pix, I know the Soundevices guys are great on supporting their stuff.

David,

AJA have a great support too. They are always responding to people questions. They have a great warranty services too.

If the 3.0 Firmware version has being delayed, I'm think is cause of the process of testing and fixing bugs. I'm still waiting too, patienly.

We don't need a quick release of the 3.0; we need a strong system. We don't wanna a quick release, and later get a thousands of patches and bug fixers; we don't wanna use our KiPro to be used as a guinea pig.

Best Regards

David, I don't really get your reaction.
AJA support has been super so far. And the upcoming features in firmware 3.0 does contain many user-based requests. That's support!
A delay in release is just real world in development.

Ki Pro v3.0 firmware coming soon!
on Dec 1, 2011 at 5:36:31 pm

Hi,

We are working hard on the new Ki Pro v3.0 firmware, which has obviously taken longer than we initially expected. This is a very significant release with tons of new features and performance tweaks. At IBC we announced it would release last month, but our policy at AJA is to not release products and upgrades until we feel they're ready.

v3.0 firmware is almost done, and within a few weeks we will post more information here and at our website, http://www.aja.com.

We appreciate your patience, and we hope you will be as pleased with v3.0 as we are!

Best regards,

Maybe the CPU in the Ki Pro is too weak for some functions? FireWire to a Mac for example?
