Low Voltage Warning
on Jun 26, 2011 at 1:26:16 am

Hello All,

Does anyone know if there is an option to raise the Low Voltage Warning to give you more time to hit stop and write the Directory files?

The Kit we designed can be powered off a Sony V-Mount camera battery and that gives us about 15 seconds of warning, but I could not get the stop button to function while the warning was going off for some reason.

I'll have to try the recovery software to see if it can recover the lost file.

Thanks for the help

Unfortunately, batteries "cliff off" at varying levels. Some go from adequate to inadequate quite fast as you experienced. There is not a way to increase the low voltage duration as the device needs 12 volt power to operate properly. Longer takes require more time to close, while shorter takes require far less and will appear to close instantaneously. If you have a file that was aborted prematurely due to power loss, you should consider looking at Aeroquartet's Movie Repair. AJA recommends it often and the track record for recovery is quite good. Batteries with meters or level indications can also be helpful on set when used alongside Ki Pro and Ki Pro Mini products.

If you have additional questions or need further assistance, don't hesitate to contact AJA Technical Support.

While the KIPro is giving the Low Voltage warning, is the Stop button deactivated? It did not seem to react while the warning was being displayed.

also I would like to insure that the the Custom take, custom clip name does not overwright a pre-recorded clip, could you advise what the correct settings are so we do not accidentally hit the button twice and overwright the previous clips.

Another solution that would help us would be when the KiPro senses a dropped frame, we would love if there was a selection in the menu to stop, or allow it to keep recording for 1 or 2 minutes, and if no video signal reappears the machine stops recording. that allows the camera operator to finish the battery swap, the wireless RF Reciever to reacquire the signal, or reconnect the video cable and continue.

Thanks

It is possible that while the warning prompt appeared you were not able to use the transport buttons. Typically, warnings appear due to some issue that blocks recording. In your case, the warning for low power appeared and you did not have enough voltage in the battery for the alarm to clear and then press stop. Most short recordings will still close due to a loss of appropriate voltage, but, as was mentioned before, the "cliff off" of some batteries makes this impossible because the power disappears too quickly.

For information regarding the Custom Clip naming, please refer to the product manual (you mention "Ki Pro", but you may have a Ki Pro or Ki Pro Mini); both manuals are available from the AJA website. The key parameter that most users err on setting is the 19.3 Use Custom Clip Take parameter. By default, even if a user enables the Custom Clip naming, this parameter is enabled and each subsequent take recorded is incremented with a take number. The Ki Pro and Ki Pro Mini manuals make it as explicit as possible - with a large red "X" icon and the word "Caution!" - that if the Use Custom Clip Take menu parameter is disabled, users must change the name of the clip between takes to avoid possibly overwriting an existing clip. Due to operator errors and/or a misunderstanding of this parameter, AJA will be removing this ability to name the clip virtually anything without a take number appended. In the future, users will be able to custom name clips, but they will always be appended by a take number.

Currently, the Ki Pro and the Ki Pro Mini stop recording when a loss of video signal occurs. AJA is considering adding a "record during loss of video" option, but, be aware that even if this is implemented, you are dealing with a compromised situation where sync, timecode and other important aspects of the signal will likely be compromised; this is why the Ki Pro and Ki Pro Mini were originally designed to stop their recordings when there was a loss of video. A better method would be to stop recording when there are things like battery changes on the camera, etc., but AJA appreciates that this is not always possible and the desire to record through a loss of video.

If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact AJA Technical Support for assistance via phone or email.
