Timecode keeps running after Playback Stop
on Mar 18, 2011 at 12:41:24 pm

Hello Farmers

Since I was running several KiPros as Players on a Film Festival. We are super happy with them, even though we made some strange experiences.
The one that bothers me the most is:
After Playing a 10 Sec File, Timecode keeps running (won't Stop at 01:00:10:00, just like a Recording in FreeRun), even the Clip has allready ended.

And then sometimes, KiPro says "Press Stop", but nothing happens, if i press!

The Files are exactly 9 seconds and 24 Frames (01:00:00:00-01:00:09:24).

Settings are:
Play Media: one
Loop Play: off

We are on Firmware 2.0.0.125

The Clips were created with FCP, Apple Pro Res 422, 720x625, 24Bit, 2x Mono 48kHz.

Does anyone know a solution?

This is not something that has been reported before. Perhaps it has something to do with the files that were transferred to the Ki Pro but were created externally by some QuickTime-based application. You should consider contacting AJA Technical Support if you have not already to review this matter.

I have seen the infinite timeline effect as well. When rewinding to the beginning of a clip, the beginning of the clip is reached but the timecode keeps descending. One must fast forward through this empty time to reach the actual start. Certainly makes cueing difficult. These were QT files exported from FCP.

There is one possibility why an incrementing timecode value and black video output might appear after the end of a clip. The Ki Pro produces black and continuous timecode if the CONFIG menu parameter 35.2 9 Pin Remote is set to Remote. From page 49 of the Ki Pro operation manual:
"Ki Pro RS-422 device control under a single clip is designed so that the clip may be obtained in it's entirety via non-linear capture. This is made possible because Ki Pro produces video black/silence prior to the first frame of video for the single clip and after the last frame of video for the single clip."

So, even if the device was being operated via the front panel UI transport buttons, the user could still see this behavior if the menu selection was Remote. It might be worthwhile to check this CONFIG menu selection to see how it is configured.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact AJA Technical Support via phone or email.

Ah... that is the case. We are using it for ProRes playback into our DaVinci for grading. It beats taking PrpRes to HDCam first. This behavior is certainly acceptable considering it provides preroll even if none was supplied in the file.

When not in 9 pin remote a cue function would be nice... maybe holding Stop then Play to recue the current clip. Using the select arrow button will cue the clip if it's the only one on the drive, otherwise it cues previous.

Thanks
