Using KiPro to record DVD
on Jan 28, 2010 at 7:38:48 pm

Is there any reason why the KiPro can't be used to convert the component or HDMI output of a non-restricted DVD from the component and/or HDMI output of a DVD player?
Thanks,
Michael Moser

Recording of video from most consumer DVD players over HDMI is restricted by HDCP and the DRM security protocols- it is hard coded in the device and will not allow any discs to be recorded at all.

Have they also hard-coded this into component output of consumer DVD players?

As there is no restriction on the disk, I thought there would be no problem.
I'm trying to see if the up-convert I get is better than the software based system I usually use.
I have an old Pioneer industrial DVD player which I'll try this with also.

Yes.the HDCP security is hard coded in the HDMI protocol.

It is one of the specs required when you license the HDMI connectors and technology.

Yes, I understand the security is on the HDMI, but what about the three wire component output of the consumer units.
Do they have a way of securing that as well?

If your DVD doesn't have copy protection, you should be just fine. If not, you will have to go through a frame sync.

It hasn't worked coming out of the component ports...I'll try a frame synch and report back.
