Is this because Apple is abandoning Firewire and no longer writer the drivers for the IO?

Perhaps. Or perhaps it's an SD only product in an HD world so it doesn't make sense to support it. Or perhaps because it's 7 years old, which is like 14 dog years in computer years. Or something.

If Apple drop firewire then the IoHD becomes legacy as well.

I use the old IO to digitize from Quad, 1" and 3/4". It still works fine.
