io Express sound out of sync
on Dec 11, 2009 at 5:23:55 pm

Hi,
currently working on a feature film with footage delivered
in AppleProRes 1920x1080 and sound in Wave (poly).
When I watch and edit my footage, my sound is 2 frames early.

I use the analog cinch outputs for the sound and HDMI to output video.
There are no firewire drives or other devices connected.
All footage is on internal SATA drives (WD - 1TB - 7500rpm - 32mb cache)

I tried outputting audio through HDMI and taking it out of
the monitor as well, but the result was the same offset in sound.
I'm 100% sure the image and audio are in sync.
When scrubbing frame by frame.
Whenever I go in 'play' the sound comes too early again.

Verified sync also by viewing over DVI on computer monitor
and mac line out. This resulted in sync sound.
So clearly there's an issue with the AJA.

Tried many local specialists without any result so far.
Any help is welcome !

Setup :
MacPro 2x2.26 quad-core
OSX 10.5.8
Final Cut Pro 7.0.1
AJA io Express (update 7.1)
Monitor : Eizo Foris FX2431
Footage : Apple ProRes 1920x1080
Sound : Wave (poly)
Internal SATA drives (WD - 1TB - 7500rpm - 32mb cache)

Are you monitoring the audio from the tv or the analog audio on the ioExpress?

I tried both options :

- analog audio output from io Express / video over HDMI to monitor (TV)
- audio over HDMI to monitor (TV) and using the TV audio output

Both had the same result : sound comes 2 frames early when playing.

When scrubbing, frame by frame, audio is in sync.
When I don't use the AJA but use the DVI and audio line out from the Mac,
sound and picture are sync as well... but of course I want to use my AJA ;-)

thanks for responding
Nico

My bet is that your tv is processing the video and not holding the audio back. Do you have another monitor to check it with?

Hmm. Didn't know some TVs or monitors would do that.
I don't dispose of another monitor with HDMI.
Could try a regular TV with analog video and see what happens.
Of course I have to work with this Eizo and via HDMI eventually...
Are you familiar with any possibility of setting up a delay for the video-signal ?
I have never come across anything like that in FCP.
I haven't found anything like that in the AJA utility tool either.

I also mailed the AJA support people but radio-silence so far unfortunately.

cheers and thanks for thinking along,
Nico

All lcds have some latency, yes. I can't remember on the ioExpress drivers, but there might be audio slew a they are on the iohd drivers. You'd have to check it's in the control panel.

I would check with analog sources and see what you get. My bet is still on your monitor.

Hi,

I'm afraid you're bet may be right.
I checked the manual for the EIZO Foris and it mentions indeed
a 2 frame delay.
It features a 'game mode' called ThruMode which should reduce
this delay to 1 frame. But still I'm stuck with a feeling of 'soft sync'.
How unfortunate that this expensive, and good monitor has this delay.

I checked the Io Express control panel and there is no such thing
(as you mentioned for the IoHD) to compensate for the audio sync.

Later today I will check with a regular studio TV to see what happens.
It will be through sdi or component though, and not through HDMI.

I guess I'll start looking for an audio delay device to compensate
my unlucky situation.

thanks for thinking along and I will keep you posted
Nico

[Nico Leunen] "Hmm. Didn't know some TVs or monitors would do that. "

all plasma (Not LCD) TV's show video 2 frames out of sync with audio.

Most cameras (pro and non-pro) record video 2 frames separate than audio.
Most DVCPROHD users did not ever notice until P2 came out, if you search here on the Cow you will find hundreds of posts on this subject.

"Are you familiar with any possibility of setting up a delay for the video-signal ? "
The IoXpress does not allow for audio slewing- you would need to do that in FCP or via an external piece of hardware.

Are there any decent consumer monitors with HDMI input that do not process the video and cause this delay?

I tried a friends LED monitor (Samsung) and also experienced a delay running Avid Media Composer via IO Express HDMI out to the LED monitor.

thanks
