AJA IO and Nehalem?
on Jun 20, 2009 at 10:49:51 am

I have been having difficulty with the audio breaking up and going out of sync on playback on my new 8 core "Nehalem" processor. I had AJA tech support step through the process with me and they had no explanation. After I hung up with AJA I connected to an older quad core mac it played perfectly. I have HDMI coming out to a Sony 1080p screen. I connected back to my new computer and the problem started again. Anyone have any idea what's going on? Thanks in advance. Bob

Bob
I am assuming that you are using an IoHD?

so the audio is bad on the same content on 2 different machines?
what is the difference between the 2 computers.

Are you SURE that the firmware has been updated? (if not -do it again)

and post detail about your system and software.

I am using FCP 6.05. I think I am updating the firmware correctly. It just asked me to do it again but it looks like the firmware update I got previously. Could it be I am not updating correctly. I had to google "power cycle" to make sure I wasn't missing something.

uninstall, and reinstall your drivers.
Certainly, trash your FCP and AJA preferences.
Do you know how to do this ?

Bob,
I know how to trash my fcp preferences.Don't know how to trash and re-install AJA. I'd be grateful.

open up the AJA Utilities folder. There is an UNINSTALL in this folder. Run the uninstaller, and REBOOT your computer.

Then go to http://www.aja.com. Click on Support. Click on the AJA I/O HD to download the drivers for your I/O HD. Follow the instructions (which come on the screen when you start the installer). Reboot.
You should be fine.

If you are not, write back.

hardware specs without the software specs are pretty useless. Like I said to understand the issue I need BOTH MACHINES OS versions, QT versions, Driver Versions, FCP versions

and don't just say they are all up-to-date give versions so WE know.

Gary,

Both machines are running Leopard 10.5.7, Final Cut 6.0.5, AJA 6.0.3, the only difference is Quicktime.
The problem mac (Nehalem) is running 7.6.2 and the older mac is running 7.6. Let me know if I left something out.

Thanks

Bob

ATI or Nvidia card in the problem machine.

and yes the 2 versions of QT could be at issue, if you have the nvidia card in the problem machine.

I have a Nvidia Ge force GT 120 in the problem machine and ATI Radeo X1900 XT on the one that's running smoothly. Do you think AJA will provide an update if that's the case?

Why would they?

this is not the first time I have heard of a playback issue on that machine/nvidia combo, but does not appear to me to be an 3rd party problem, it is more like (educated guess) to do with new GPU processing code at the Core OS level conflicting with older CPU processing code in the applications.

Hi Jeremy,

For my scratch drive I am using a 750 gb internal hard drive and the format on the timeline and footage is pro res 422.

1080i? That might not be a fast enough drive even the specs might tell you so. Whenever anything goes out of sync on playback, it's usually due to slow drives.

FCP 6.0.6 update may fix your problem. Available now.
