AJA IOHD update?
on Apr 1, 2009 at 9:33:30 pm

I've been debating on buying the IO HD for a while now. The only thing that concerns me is that it's been out now for over 4 years. Do you think AJA will come out with a hardware update anytime soon. I also have been hearing rumors that Apple is modifying the Pro Res codec for the next release of FCS2. I'm concerned the it might effect the IO HD in it's current state. I think I will most likely try and rent for the time being. Any insight or advice would be appreciated.

[James Disch] "The only thing that concerns me is that it's been out now for over 4 years."

It has? I think it's less than two.

Any rumors of ProRes updates are just that. Rumors. If there's any updates, I am sure the ioHD would be able to handle it. v6.0.3 of the drivers was just released weeks ago.

NAB is just around the corner. I haven't heard of any new announcements from AJA, but usually all the big announcements don't happen till just before or during NAB. If you are really concerned, you can wait. If you need to buy now, buy now and you won't be disappointed because you can still work today and even long after NAB with the ioHD. I know I plan to.

Hey Jeremy, my bad, it has been out for over 2 years, not 4. I normally don't pay attention to any rumors either, but with a new FCS2 update around the corner, (hopefully), I'll probably wait.
Anyone in the Seattle area know of a good place to rent an IO HD?

I am going to mirror Jeremy's comments.

NAB is less than 3 weeks from starting- this is not really the time to buy gear if it is not an absolute necessity

Think about one thought.

Does it fill my foreseeable need?

Does this product fill what I think my next needs will be for the next 2-5 years? If it does great, if you think you need more (or less) look at one of the other solutions ( Kona 3 or Kona LHe) to see if they fit better in your workflow needs.

Remember also, that AJA's hardware tends to have a very long shelf life due to updates to the drivers that are ever increasing the functionality and partly because their products last a long time.

The IoHD has been shipping for less than 2 years, I expect my units to last another 4-6 years at leas: as long as I don't drop them onset again, then they will end their careers as stand alone converters. Since it is my sincere hope that FW will no longer included on the Apple motherboard by that time.

IF Apple does update the ProRes codec wouldn't AJA be able to do a firmware upgrade to be able to take advantage of it?

Ditto on the wait to see what is announced unless you need something now.

Rent for 5-6 times and you might as well own one. I love mine and seriously doubt any FC user wouldn't find more uses than they ever planned on. Aside from normal uses, I added it into my home theater workflow directly off of my timeline. Buy it.

Thanks for your response, Since NAB is so close I am going to wait and see what transpires. Then I will most likely pick one up.

Hope everyones keeping busy!

Jeff, so do you just use the hdmi to a home reciever and use the passthrough to work in your home theater setup?

Hi Kevin,

I have an older Denon receiver which does not have HDMI. I go component out of the IOHD into input 3. I bought BNC to RCA cables. I also use the AES audio out into 2 AJA ADA4 converters and transformers and go xlr to rca into the external inputs. I can play a 5.1 session off the timeline or toggle those tracks off and toggle stereo on. This really helps me with my editing on the fly. My timelines are pro res hq and my 3 angle multiclips play perfectly.
