What would the exact process be for using the IOHD for a final cut from 720p to SD DVD?
Obviously the 720p material is ProRes...
Would I output straight to a DVD Master or should I just use compressor?
Is there any benefit to using the IOHD straight to DVD?
Am I making any sense here?

just edit your Proress (720p) footage in a ProRess NTSC sequence. Send to Compressor NTSC MPG2. Before sending to Compressor set your sequence to High Precission rendering and Motion rendering> Best.

[johnny clark] "s there any benefit to using the IOHD straight to DVD?"

i would be curious about the speed and quality of both workflows. have you compared them?

I don't understand:" using the IOHD straight to DVD".
Do the ioHD compress MPG2? Never heard.
The ioHD will helps you to make your beautiful Proress master.
Then you need another application (Compressor, DVDSTpro, Toast..) to create the MPG2s.

I guess my questions really are:
When and why would you use this box for down conversion over software conversion?
Why would it be better than using Apple's Compressor?
What's to be gained from down conversion through this magic box?

Hi Johny,
I've been having few discussions about the Hardward-conversion vs Software-conversion.
For me is just a myth. There is nothing that a graphic card can do that a CPU can not do.
In the end the video card is like a small computer inside the computer.
There are many people that say that they get a better downconverting from DVCProHD to SD with the KONA or when done in a DVCPRoHD video desk. But this people also accept that those machines has been developed or co-developed by PANASONIC who is the master of the DVCProHD codec.
My idea is that the software installed in those machines is better than the one you have in FC or Compressor to make the downconversion. If FC would have the same algorithms, the quality of the conversion would be the same. Just slower.
I think that the ioHD will give you only more speed when working with Proress.

[johnny clark] "When and why would you use this box for down conversion over software conversion? "

when you need the conversion in REAL TIME ( NOW!!!)

"Why would it be better than using Apple's Compressor?"

Apple barely understands then video space - AJA has been a driving force in conversion products for years- they started as a hardware conversion company, long before FCP or Apples entrance into the video space. In the Professional Video space - real time hardware conversion is preferred over any other.

"What's to be gained from down conversion through this magic box? "

From your attitude shown here- you do not see or possibly do not have the need for professional tools and products of this caliber.

The IoHD is more than a converter, more than a capture /playback device - think about this-if you compare all of the video and audio conversions the IoHD is capable of as A/D, D/A, embedding analog into HDSDI , de-embedding analog from HDSDI, LTC capture, etc.. - the conversion products alone are well over $10,000 USD. - oh and it can capture and monitor your video too.

But that does not mean this is the tool for everyone.
