IMPORTING BETA CAM SP to MacBook PRO/FCP
on Sep 25, 2006 at 9:09:30 pm

I have searched the archives and couldn't enough
infomation to clarify my situation....

I am trying to figure out the BEST way to import
BETA CAM SP Footage into my Mac Book Pro
for editing in FCP 5.1 .

I am shooting and producing a small project (20 min)
that has been shot on Beta Cam SP
So far I have set up for 3TB of Storage
(4 Sata Hard Drives and 2 Backup Firewire)
but do not know the best way to handle
converting and inputing the footage.

Some say the SONY J30 SDI is the answer.....

But this AJA Io solution seems better.
Not clear about the different versions tho
(Io, Io LA, Io LD)
And what else do I need to complete the package ?

As my expertise is in the Camera part
(and not the Editing)
I will likely only ROUGH CUT the project
before handing it over to a real Editor.
But even so ....I need to have a good set up.

Thank you in advance
and again I apologize for my limited knowledge thus far.

The IO LA is for analogue (like Beta SP) footage-only. It's a very good product. Go to the AJA site to
learn more about it.

Yes. Thank you.
I have been to the website and the Io La seems the answer
for this particular project.

However, as this will not be the only project
(and indeed Digital is in the picture sometimes),
it makes better long term sense to get the Io....which can handle both.

As portabliltiy issues exist, however,
I am wondering if there is any DISADVANTAGE to getting
BOTH the LA and the LD opposed to the IO in one package.
Cant seem to tell by the specs ....
Does the IO have any extra features that I would NOT have
by have by working with the LA and LD separately ?

Thank you again for the advice.

The advantage in size by having them separate is there, but you do give up a couple of things
by doing it that way. The IO has an Audio Word Clock, 8 channels of optical digital audio I/O (ADAT),
and 4 channels of AES/EBU audio I/O. It might have other things too, but that's all I can think of.

Got it.
And having things get (or be)
out of sync
becomes a greater headache (and cost)
than the issue of size.

Thank you for this additional reality.
