Audio issues with CS6 Kona 3
on Jun 1, 2012 at 6:59:55 pm

I just installed the Aja drivers and I notice there is a lot of audio dropout. Anyone else experience this. I have a Mac Pro 2,1 with a Kona 3

I think I've narrowed down the issue. When I'm in Premiere Pro CS6 and I open up a 720p 59.94 ProRes Clip in the Source Monitor it plays perfectly. When I drag it to my sequence, it starts to act wonky. The sequence I created was a Pro Res sequence and I drag the clip down to it and it asks if I want the sequence to conform to the clip. I click yes. This is the wonky sequence.

I created a second sequence and clicked no to the conform to clip and now my stuff plays perfectly. Not sure what's going on , but I may have a temporary solution.

Have you heard anything back? This was a HUGE issue with cs5 and AJA that never got fully resolved. Was certainly hoping this had been addressed better in the drivers for CS6.

Me too. I installed the drivers yesterday and spent about an hour working with the program and everything worked great. Today everything has gone south. Broken audio, static and a number of Kernal panics when I change audio hardware in preferences. Switching from default in and out to Kona 3 card for voice over.

I have no idea what's going on. One moment everything is playing back fine, the next either no audio, static in audio or dropped audio intermittently.

Spoke with AJA this morning and the solution for the intermittent sound is to toggle between "default output" and "system default input/output".

Worked for me.

They had no suggestions on what was causing the Kernal Panic I was getting while trying to change audio hardware preference and also while in the Mac audio preference going from line input and output to Kona card.

I noticed something else a little weird. If I set up a sequence that is 720p 59.94 and playback prores footage that is 720p 59.94, I get jumpy playback and audio issues. If I create a new sequence that is 720p 29.97 and playback the footage that is 720p 59.94 everything works great and no issues. It does this with or without the Kona3 turned on.

Did the toggle trick work for cleaning up audio. I've noticed that I need to do it more than once over the period of several hours editing.

Haven't run into your other issue, but right now I'm only editing a mixed bag of 30p and 29.97i onto a 1080/29.97i timeline. All seems to be working as it should.

It seems to have helped some. I'm still getting much better playback on a 29.97 timeline than a 59.94 timeline.

What are you getting for Kernal Panic. I'm getting a bunch "Sorry but Premiere has experienced a serious error and must shut down". I've had 6 or 7 of those in the last couple of days. Seemed to start after I added a noise reduction plugin. Don't know if that means anything.

I've seen a few of the Premier errors, but the Kernal panics were full blown semi transparent box in middle of screen telling me I had to restart. Repairing permissions seems to have solved all of the issues however. A least for now.

I have called Adobe and complained about this issue. I have the Alesis Multimix 4 and it keeps dropping audio. It won't always let me toggle back using system default. This is a mess.
Editing is a nightmare. Anytime I render it drops out. Have to reboot software and sometimes need to restart iMac.
This is a huge issue and I blame Adobe Premiere for this issue. If it works sometimes then it should work all the time. It's not a driver issue. Alesis has no drivers. Plug and play.

I'm having issues as well on my 12 core 10.7.4 Kona 3. Seemed to be good the last couple of days but all of the sudden it's really crappy. Either audio doesn't play at all, or is distorted or normal. Stopping and starting PB will rotate between the 3. Definitely seemed to get worse with just an aiff in the timeline with no video. Was doing ok with timelines with A&V.

I went back and tried a couple of things. Toggling settings does something but what I've really noticed is that the audio performance is terrible when there is only audio in the timeline. It's also bad playing an audio track in the preview monitor. The audio would play one out of three times and would sometimes just go mute after a couple of seconds even though the meters are still moving. I also found if I took just random video and put it with my audio only track the performance when to what you would expect. Kind of an issue since often you cut audio first and add video later.

Same issue with the Kona LHi. Changing to anything other than AJA Kona out helps. Built In Digital Out works best for now. Same problem back with 5.5. Ugh. I just noticed today that I get no audio from my Mac if Premiere Pro is open. So if I play a video clip outside of premiere I get no audio. Have to close Premiere first then the audio games back. Anyone else have this issue?

[Erik Naso] " Changing to anything other than AJA Kona out helps. Built In Digital Out works best for now"

Your main System Preferences > Audio > Output needs to be set to something other than AJA Kona. This is how the new Transmit Engine in Adobe works, it will override the System Prefs and play out via the Kona.

Thanks Walter

I wasn't able to get any audio from the computer at all when playing files. Only from Premier. I called AJA and reinstalled the AJA software NDD version and now the issue is fixed. I haven't tested the playback yet.

I tested the audio after reinstalling the AJA software and it's still bad. Lots of dropout and back to no audio output outside of Premiere when the program is open. I have to quite Premiere Pro to get audio from a movie or anything with sound. This is frustrating and I can't edit like this today.

Re: Audio issues with CS6 Kona 3

It's critical that both the System Preferences audio settings and the Premiere Audio Hardware preference not be set to "AJA". If either is set to AJA hardware, drop outs and distorted audio will result. Also important: if the setting in either case is incorrect and then corrected, the system must be rebooted before audio will be restored to correct operation. The usual settings for the Mac OS audio should be "Line Out" or "Internal Speaker," etc. Anything other than "AJA". For Premiere, the usual setting should be "System Default" etc. and not "AJA."

This information was provided in the Release Notes document supplied with the latest AJA Adobe Mac Plug Ins:
http://www.aja.com/ajashare/ajadocuments/AJA_Adobe_Plugins_Mac_10.3.pdf

From that document:
• AJA KONA and Io Core Audio drivers are not used in Premiere Pro. The Core
Audio driver will show up in the Premiere Pro Audio Hardware selector, but users
should instead select the Premiere Pro default audio device. If the Core Audio
driver is selected, some audio problems may occur. See the the AJA Adobe Plug-ins
manual for more information on setting up the audio output in Premiere Pro.

If you need assistance configuring the audio, please feel free to contact AJA Technical Support via phone or email.

Thanks for the settings however I've done all of them and this is what I still have problems with.

Setting system audio to Line Out results with no audio output from my Mac Pro outside of Premiere Pro. Websites, movie clips audio files all playback with no audio.

Still getting dropout in Premiere Pro.

Yeah. I've tried just about every setting as well. Setting Audio to System Default seems to help a little but I still get silence and drop outs left and right. I have Avid Media Composer and Final Cut Pro 7 on the same system and do not have any issues at all with either one of them.

Things are a little better today.

Here is what I did per tech support.

Powered down Mac and then reset the LHi by holding down the tiny black button on the card for 5 seconds while I booting the computer.
Then ran the updater in the AJA folder to update firmware.
Reboot.

Audio is now working outside of premiere on the mac with no issues.

No more distorted audio but still getting complete dropout on both sequence and source. To get audio back I have to click on one or the others pane. If audio is dropped in sequence I click on source and vice versa then the audio comes back. Hopefully this will get fixed with some kind of update from either Adobe or AJA.
Thanks for the Tech support AJA!

A little late to this post but wanted to get some feedback.
Setting system sound settings to digital in/out seems to make the PP6 audio playback much better.
Problem now is any audio played through other apps like QT and web browsers won't play out.
We are monitoring the audio out of the embedded SDI via a disembedder.
Any suggestions for other settings would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm sorry but this isn't good enough.
Are we expected to open System Prefs and change audio drivers every time we switch between applications because of this Premiere issue? That is not real world practical!

I have been exploring moving over to Premiere from FCP7 but this is just all too hard. I should be able to use the same piece of hardware between multiple software packages, and have been seamlessly. Up until i tried to use Adobe Premiere.

Somebody needs to fix this!

Sounds like its systemic to your computer. Im cutting a music video now. Just the audio track. Clear as a bell on the Kona 3. See system configuration below.

Re: Audio issues with CS6 Kona 3

I fixed these problems (99% of the time) by calling AJA Support. He had me not only set the OSX system preferences output to "optical digital out" but also the INPUT to "optical digital in". He said BOTH need to be set this way. Then in CS6 audio hardware preferences set to "built in output". Then set the CS6 Playback default player to "Adobe Player"and the audio device to the "AJA Kona(your flavor here)"

One final thing is that he had me do is delete my AJA preferences in the "user>library>preferences folder. Basically all of the"com.aja.xxxx" files.

Once I did all of this and did a reboot everything has worked very nicely.
