Kona 3 Settings in Premiere CS5.5
on Oct 27, 2011 at 4:49:44 pm

Hi..

I've just installed the latest kona drivers and Mac plugin.

But I don't see any "Preferences" or "Sequence Settings" for AJA Kona3 in Premiere CS5.5.

Where should i be finding these settings?
I'm used to setting playback prefs in FCP for my Kona card but can't see anything at all in Premiere.

I have an external monitor linked via SDI and want Premiere to output to it using my Kona3 like i do in FCP.

Maybe the install has gone to the wrong place - do i need to move any files to their correct homes so Premiere can see/use them?

I can't even be sure if Premiere is using the card at all...

Thanks for any help/advice with this.

regards...Max

You also need to install the CS5.5 plugin...under the UTILITIES AND OPTIONS area at the bottom.

When You create new sequence - make sure that you use AJA preset, which should appear among others after you installed aja adobe plugin. When You use the aja sequence - you have the video outputted through the card. But be aware that aja have buggy audio driver, and to work you should turn audio hardware at preferences to built in out instead of aja, even if you use aja audio out.

Hi..

Thanks for your help with this Mikhail and Shane...

I found the AJA Sequence Presets for New Sequences.
Either my machine needed a re-start or i just hadn't seen them.

The available settings do seem a bit odd though. I want to edit HD at 25fps Progressive.
But there isn't a setting for that. There is only 50fps or 25i and i don't seem to be able to change the 25i sequence settings to progressive or the 50fps to 25..?

So any advice with that now would be very much appreciated.

Thanks, best regards...Max

HI..

I just went onto the AJA site and found this in their FAQ.

Q: The AJA playback setting in Premiere Pro is fixed at 1080i and I cannot change it to 1080p?
A: In the AJA playback setting window, check the "disable seqmented frames" checkbox. This will change the Kona video output from 1080i to 1080p. Note: The video output is 1080pSF when a 1080i playback setting is used with a progressive sequence.

This must be the only way to convert the sequence to 25 fps Progressive. ?

What would you say " 1080pSF " means?

Single Field or Single Frame ? Cos Single Field for a prog clip would in effect mean "half res" no?! And we don't want that....

Any of your thoughts or experience with these settings and outputting with them would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks...Max

Replying to myself again...I just wanted to put up what i have learned as it may help someone else...

SF (1080pSF) in this case means segmented frame.

"This technique allows for a progressive picture to be processed through the same electronic circuitry that is used to store, process and route interlaced video."

In case anyone else wants to know...

A search here on the Cow would supply info relevant to your specific issue also.

PsF is a transmission protocol, designed for legacy compatibility and is typically used over HD/ SDI , your device decided whether you are seeing P or PsF.

It is designed after (and mimics) the "double shutter" technique used to playback 24fps film in theaters, were every frame is exposed to the screen 2 times.

[russell shaver] ""double shutter"? Really? Got a reference for this "technique"?"

First off it is not a "technique" as in trick.

This is the way the film projectors have worked since Edison, and it has been mimiced in the digital world and a simple search of Cinema Projection or PsF would bring up the info, since you seem to not believe.
