Kona3 capture 1080sf23.98 to 1080i29.97?
on Sep 15, 2011 at 4:17:44 pm

Searched around couldn't find a clear answer.

Trying to bring in 1080sf23.98 to 1080i29.97 to work with other 1080i29.97 material using Kona3 and FCP and HDW-D1800 deck

I actually called AJA and they said this can't be done on the Kona and I need to add the pull down in FCP.

Seems strange that the Kona wouldn't be able to do this. And i thought i saw some info suggesting it could be done.

Anybody know if this is possible through the AJA CP?

Possibly post a screen shot of the CP settings?

Thanks in advance

[Justin Schultz] "Anybody know if this is possible through the AJA CP?"

So you don't believe AJA themselves when they say it cannot be done? Dude...if they say it can't be done, it can't be done. But I'll add to their answer...it cannot be done. You can only add/remove pulldown when you OUTPUT ...not INPUT. You have to add the pulldown in Compressor.

I have a tutorial on how to upconvert SD to HD with the Kona, and I had a 23.98 project, but 29.97 material. I had to capture it as 29.97, and then use Compressor to remove the pulldown.

FYI...Decklink, Matrox, MOTU...and on the Avid side Nitris DX, Mojo DX...none of them convert the frame rate on import either. Output only.

And trust AJA over us. Their tech support knows more than we do. I had to call them to get that answer myself.

Perhaps that deck has the 3:2 pulldown option installed?

The Sony JH3 can add pulldown. I've had to hook one up on top of its big brother to do the job in the past.

The HDW-1800 needs an optional card to add pulldown, which may or many not be installed. Check your menus.

This is very simple to do as long as you have the HKDW-104 card installed in the 1800 deck. No, the Kona won't do this for you but the deck will. Just add the pulldown on ingest. Problem solved.

If you've an AJA Kai Pro, you could play & convert the 23.97 file from your kona3 into into the Kai Pro as a new 29.97 file & re-import this new file back into your 29.97 project.

item 013 in menu "system frequency"
select
use multiknob to select on
use multiknob to select 23.98 Psf Pull down out if you want HD "Pull down out SD" if you want SD
You may need some other menu settings depending on whats coming down the 422 line and the settings for how the pull down is applied 30 frame setting and 24 frame setting.
I keep them both set to 01:00:00:00 the TC is the same every second on the second between 23.98 and 29.97. Make sure you are set up in NDF and you'll be fine
You will need to keep ref at 23.98 with tri level on the HDCam deck and black or input on your Kona. black is OK if your HDCam has black feeding the option2 ref on the rear of the machine.

If you are unsure ask your engineer or sales rep how to set it up there is a few items regarding TC handling better left to someone who understands the two headed monster.
