Premier Pro audio drop outs and choppy playback using the KONA

I have a Kona 3 board and decided to try out PPro CS5.5, I am also part of the large group of editors who are contemplating switching to either Avid or Premiere.

I installed all the newest AJA required drivers and restarted my computer. Once in Premiere, I began playing the timeline and immediately began getting audio drop outs during playback, so I experimented a little.

After much experimenting, I went into my Mac system preferences and set the audio out to "Headphones (Headphone port)" out.

I Went back to PPro CS 5.5 (using the AJA settings) and played the timeline and no more audio drops outs! Not sure why this is, but I do agree with everyone that the AJA drivers are buggy and not as good as the ones for FCP7.

For example, when I scrub the timeline not using the KONA 3, it scrubs smoothly and the timeline is very snappy and responsive. When I use the KONA 3 board, it seems to slow down the timeline, and when I scrub the timeline it just skips to frames and does not give me smooth playback. This is problematic when trying to do fine cuts.

I love AJA products and hope that they will continue to perfect the drivers for Premiere. As for right now I will continue to work in FCP7 and will await for additional drivers for PPro CS5.5.

What are your system specs and are you booted into 64 bit mode?

Hi Jason,

On a Mac Pro 8 core, 64 bit with all new AJA drivers.

[Miro Segura] "On a Mac Pro 8 core, 64 bit with all new AJA drivers."

I ask because I was having similar problems on my older Mac Pro 1,1. I've only got four cores and my machine won't boot into 64 bit mode. It sounds like a faster machine doesn't necessarily solve the problems.

Same problem here, just installed Premeire 5.5 and was hoping for the best but got the choppyness and audio dropouts.

Booted into 64bit didn't help, tried HD and SD, same thing, tried footage from my 7D same thing.

Will wait and see what AJA's next set of drivers do.

Back to FCP7 for now.

Premiere Pro > Preferences > Audio Hardware

Set that to anything OTHER than AJA Kona. I have it set to Built In Audio.

In System Prefs > Audio Output I have it set to AJA Kona.

Yes, that's a weird setting in the Audio Hardware but that's where it needs to be.

As for the choppiness, we have that on our four core machine and have determined that the four core will not work with ProRes footage playing back through the AJA Kona. An 8 core machine works just fine.

As a test though, bring up your Activity Monitor and the CPU Activity. See if the cores max out when trying to play back the footage with the AJA Kona being used for output.

Anyone,

I tried capturing in Premiere 5.5 from HDCAM SR and DIGIBETA, but it only captures non-controllable without timecode. It also says the bit rate is too high when I capture with the SR. I tried doing what was recommended, but my playback still has audio dropouts.

I am using Mac, Kona 3, 2 x 2.66 Quad Core Intel Processor, 16 GB of RAM

Thanks,
