Resolve and Kona

First off, I'm cross posting this to Kona and DaVinci forums in the hope that it may get things moving.

I know this subject has been beaten to death before, but I'm hopeful one of the company representatives that read these forums may get the ball rolling in regard to Resolve running with a Kona3/3G card

We would love to move to Resolve from Color but all of our systems are running Kona 3's. Because of too many reasons to list, it's simply not possible for us to switch to DeckLink.

However we do want to start running Resolve.

This is the reply I get from AJA when I ask about it:

"We aren't aware of any plans for these companies. It is advisable to contact them directly"....."again, support is done thru their tech."

And I've heard second hand, from a very reliable source, that this quote can be contributed to BlackMagic:

"(BlackMagic representative) they were willing to support AJA with the Resolve. But they would not write the drivers or anything like that, that would be up to AJA."

We have plenty of BlackMagic converter boxes and we have plenty of AJA Kona boxes, so we're not favoring one company over the other.

I think in this day and age both companies would be able to see why it is no longer beneficial to be mutually independent on all fronts. Yes AJA and BlackMagic are competitors in some areas, but not in supporting this software.

Kona and Resolve supporting each other would be beneficial to both companies. BlackMagic would sell more software and AJA would stop people from jumping ship to the DeckLink when they want to move from Color to Resolve.

Just my 2 cents

Stuart

It's doubtful you will ever see this support.

For this reason we installed a BlackMagic Extreme 3D card in our Resolve system. Works perfectly fine and of course the card was pretty cheap too.

If the Kona support should ever come, then we could look at putting Resolve in all our edit suites maybe, but for the time being it resides on one workstation in a color suite.

Yeah, thanks, coming to realize that if it does happen, it's not going to be soon enough. Looking at a few other 3rd party suppliers to solve the problem. Meanwhile Scratch Six has just been released for Mac at a very attractive price - decisions

Im in a very similar dilemma Stuart:

problem is Scratch is way more expensive (although i dont think the price is too bad)and it doesn't use either BMD or AJA or any pro video card for that matter. Just the QuadroFX SDI daughter card from nVidia. other than that you'll have to use the second Dual link DVI out of your card

Assimilate just released their LAB product that was announced at NAB. You need to wait til IBC next month to see what else is coming.

I think we will see lots of changes in the next couple of months.

[Nigel Thompson] "but isnt scratch Lab for on-set dailies and VFX aid etc"

The core of the app is an integral part of Scratch 6, while the $5Kusd version is meant to be used for data management, it does function like the rest of Scratch does.

"When is IBC anyway ?"

2nd weekend of September. ( 8-12th?)

I will be there for my IBC 10 yr aniversary (while my wife will be home celebrating our 24th year of marrige)

Ok ! When I read the info it said primary grading so I thought it would not have secondaries and shapes etc.

Dude ! You are nuts no way I was leaving my wife. Just make sure you have somewhere to sleep when you get back lol . Does the phrase 'dog house' come to kind lolol

I have brought her before- she has a schedule conflict and cannot join me, hey its been 10 years of leaving on my anniversary and I still have a place to stay (most of the time).
This time around, I think she will be glad to be rid of me.

She does get the benefit of traveling with me occasionally, hell I have taken her to China, all over Europe multiple times and I think she may join me in Taipei later this year and I am taking her 1/2 way across the US just so she can get a behind the scenes peak at the US version of Antiques Roadshow being shot later in August.
