FCP X and AJA
on Jun 21, 2011 at 3:23:06 pm

Final Cut Pro X is the latest update for Apple's popular non-linear editing software. It features a new user interface and boasts new, exciting features for editors. However, the way editors interact with third party tools, like the AJA KONA cards, is different from the previous versions of Final Cut Pro. AJA has prepared a document that explains how editors can use AJA products with the latest version of Final Cut Pro. Please visit the following URL to view and download the PDF document:
http://www.aja.com/pdf/FCP_X_and_AJA.pdf

KONA X Beta drivers are available for KONA users running Final Cut Pro X with KONA 3G, KONA 3, or KONA LHi in the Support area of the AJA website:
http://www.aja.com/support/index.php

Note: users running Final Cut Pro 7 should use the KONA version 9.0.1 drivers.

Before installing KONA X Beta software, ensure you thoroughly read the PDF mentioned above.

If you have additional questions, feel free to contact AJA Technical Support via phone or email.

+1 about the LHE support!!

Can I install Final cut X without messing up the existing final cut pro? I mean the Final cut X is another application and not a upgrade, can I have both installed (final cut pro and final cut X with separate aja plugins). I like to keep my older aja driver and install the new beta. Hope this is possible since everything is working as it is now.

I read the Aja document and they recomend to install the new final cut X on another bootdrive. Does this mean you can only use one aja plugin?

The aja should be consider as preview quality it says. Does this mean you get less quality picture from AJA in fcp X compared to Finalcut pro 7?

Io HD, Io Express, KONA LHe and KONA LSe can be used to ingest from tape or output to tape via the AJA VTR Xchange application; this allows you to create clips for use in Final Cut Pro X or edit to tape clips exported from Final Cut Pro X. At this time, the Io HD, Io Express, KONA LHe and KONA LSe do not provide video preview monitoring for Final Cut Pro X. The AJA KONA 3G, AJA KONA LHi and the AJA KONA 3 do provide video output at preview quality at this time. We note in the document that the output produced by the KONA during editorial should be considered preview quality. This distinction is noted because the video output method for Final Cut Pro X differs from the previous video output method used with previous versions of Final Cut Pro.

You can still use the AJA KONA for full quality video output from the AJA TV application or the AJA VTR Xchange application.

AJA recommends that instead of installing Final Cut Pro X alongside your current version of Final Cut Pro, you create a new boot drive for your computer with a clean Snow Leopard OS install, then install Final Cut Pro X to this alternate boot drive. This way, you can continue to work on your older version of Final Cut Pro with your AJA products as you have been and begin to work on the new Final Cut Pro X with the AJA KONA X Beta drivers. This will give you the most flexibility if you find you need to use the older or newer version of Final Cut Pro.

Please be aware that this is a rare public beta driver from AJA. It is designed to provide video output at preview quality from the KONA cards listed and is considered a beta. As Apple's Final Cut Pro X evolves, expect AJA to provide new and exciting interactions with the software and expand the workflow possibilities.

If you have further questions, please refer to the document found here:

You should also feel free to contact AJA Technical Support via phone or email if you have additional operational questions.

So it's possible that the LHe may be supported under FCPX in the future? Just not with the Beta drivers?

We cannot comment on what may be enabled by Apple in the future. We can say that as Apple's Final Cut Pro X evolves, you can reasonably expect AJA to provide new interactions with the software.

AJA does the best they can as quickly as they can. It is just my opinion, but I like having them in my corner, doing post-production.

In my experience AJA is in a league of their own with regard to support; testing pre driver releases; product reliability, integrity and longevity; and did I say support?! If only they could purchase FCP 7.0 and turn it into the beast that it could have been.

Sorry to hijack the post but I felt compelled.

BTW If AJA Sales is still subscribing to this thread - I'm in..
