Final Cut Pro and AJA Kona 3G Image output on monitor
on Feb 14, 2011 at 2:49:27 pm

Hi Guys,
I am getting this jagged edge look in Final Cut Pro 7 even before I add the Title to a time line. I am going through the Kona 3G to an LG 32PC5RA plasma TV through the supplied HDMI cable. Is there a way of getting rid of this stair stepping?

Thanks a million in advance.

Lets start with the basics:

What resolution & codec is your timeline?

What are your output settings in FCP?

What are your Kona3 Control panel settings? (Frame Buffer and Output)

Before I leave the Internet cafe for the Studio I will load this picture up as I don't have adequate internet connection there in the studio. I can load up all other info from there though.

This still is from the time line. I will post all details.

Dave

without knowing what you have it is hard to help.

IF you are cutting SD footage and viewing on a native HD display there is a very good chance the monitor is causing the issue.

IF you are cutting HD footage, you could have a down converted output that your monitor is up-converting

turn off any settings in the monitor use the default or Standard settings.
DO NOT EVER use any enhanced images settings on your post monitoring solution.

I just checked and the the monitor is set to the default settings. I am still getting those jaggies. I am using the LG 32PC5RA TV.

The only way the jaggies disappear is if I use the anti-aliasing filter TWICE and set to FULL (10)

Compressor: XDCam EX 1080p25
Pixel: Aspect: Square
Frame Size:1920 x 1080
Field Dominance : None
Editing Timebase: 25

I shot the footage with the Sony EX3 and captured the clips into FCP 7 via the log and transfer plugin. I edited native and am using that in the easy setups to output through the HDMI, primary setting to the monitor. I will set the plasma TV to its default settings though I don't think I have touched them.

Thanks Guys.

Getting there!

Those are the FCP Sequence settings.

What is the output set to via the Kona, and what are the Kona control panel settings?

Well, I see a mismatch off the bat.

Your Sequence is at 1080p25, your output is at 1080i. Rectify the output to match the sequence and see if that helps.

What is that i.e. What are we looking at?

Hi, the first picture is a Boris Title 3D graphic that I am playing out to the monitor from the viewer. I have not put it on the timeline.

The second picture is a close up of the edge of a client's suit where his shirt and tie meet. This I am playing from the timeline.

I took these stills off the screen by holding a Fujifilm Finepix Z still camera close to areas that show the stair stepping. :)

Hi guys, I am not getting an Aja Kona 3G 1080p 25 setting in the video playback settings in Final cut. The closest I am getting is 1080psf25. I set the format in the Kona panel to 1080p25 and got the warning (P) formats are rare, you may want to progressive (sf). The jaggies remain.

Is your footage and timeline set to a field dom of none? Is this only when the timeline is paused? You can change the pause settings to full frame from single field in the AJA control panel.

Also, can you please explain what we are looking at there? It's really hard to tell. You aren't trying to use a 3d motion filter are you?

A bit more info would help.

Jeremy

Yes the field dominance is set to NONE. This happens whether the playhead is both playing and paused. The pause settings in the AJA control panel are set to full frame. I changed the settings to single field but nothing changed. I have not applied any filters. Thanks for your responses guys.

I used a small digital camera to record what I see on the monitor and put it on YouTube :)
