Kona LHi, FCP & 720p
on Jan 17, 2011 at 9:22:04 pm

I have a octo intel mac with 8 gigs of ram and the latest version of FCP and a Kona LHi with the 8.1 drivers. I use a xserve raid and an internal raid for media playback. Ok so here's the deal.

If a project has a 720p prores sequence with a 59.94 timebase, I can't playback the sequence without turning off mirror to desktop. If I try to mirror to desktop the sdi signal to the external monitor drops frames and goes way out of sync.

If the 720 sequence has a 23.98 timebase, everything is fine.

1080i or standard def dont have this problem. Thoughts?

Are you using the proper easy setup?

What codec?

So your video output to set to 720p 59,94 10bit?

What kind of drives are you playing back from?

[dan luke] "I use a xserve raid and an internal raid for media playback."

So which one is this 59.94 material on? Why two?

this stuff is on the xserve. I have 2 to maximize storage ability.

And how fast is the drive running? Use the AJA system test.

Top graph is reading one of the 720 59.94 files from the INTERNAL raid. Bottom is from the XSERVE.

File size is 21gigs. Playback thru FCP with desktop mirror doesn't work from either location.

Then the speeds are up there. Are you sure you have the setting correct?

This should be working perfectly. I'd try and uninstall and reinstall of the Kona drivers and see if that shakes loose any issues.

It's been a problem over a year. I'm not sure how many driver iterations I've been through in that time period. The problem occurs when I playback a clip in the viewer so not a whole lot of settings to consider.

[dan luke] "The problem occurs when I playback a clip in the viewer so not a whole lot of settings to consider."

Well, but there is. If FCP is in a different mode than 59.94 and you material playing back is 59.94, the clip and the video output settings won't match.

You mean the playback output settings in the A/V Device tab of the audio/video settings menu? I really only have 2 viable alternatives. Either 8 or 10 bit 720 59.94. Any other setting won't playback or is an unsupported signal for my monitor. 720 8bit or 10bit exhibits the same behavior.

It's really easy, Duke.

Hit control-q, select AJA Kona LHi 720p 59.94 ProRes as the easy setup and make a new sequence.

Load clip in to viewer, play.

Try loading that same clip in to a timeline and play.

What do you see?

Then perhaps there is something wrong with the clip. 720p59.94 clips play just fine here on the LHi we have.

Where did these clips come from?

They're Ki-Pro clips data rate around 17 MB/sec. What kind of data rates do you have? The rates for other clips in this project are pro-res clips converted from HDV tape over firewire 23.98 fps and the data rate is around 7 MB/sec.

For 720p59.94 clips, that is the neighborhood of data rate, for sure. ProRes is VBR so it will fluctuate a little bit.

HDV is much smaller than ProRes.

Any chance you can upload a small/short full res sample of the KiPro capture?

I've uploaded a 345meg sample clip. I have confirmed that this clip has the same playback problems as the other 59.94 fps clips.

this whole thing is insane. You should be able to playback a single stream of ProRes422 or DVCProHD right from your boot drive. Something is very wrong with your system.

For your Xserve RAID -
open RAID Admin (you do have RAID admin, right ?)
click on Setttings> Performance
under performance, click this for EACH SET of drives -
Disk Drive Cache - enable (check this box)
Allow Flush - disable (uncheck this box)
Cache - enable (check this box)
Streaming - disable (uncheck this box)
Read Prefetch - 8 stripe (this is in the middle window).

OK, now for your computer - you did not say what type of MAC this is - is this an early MAC Pro ? Is it a Model 1,1 version that uses Expansion Slot Utility ? Open up Expansion Slot Utility (do you know how to do that), and MAKE SURE that NOTHING is in a x1 slot. The XServe RAID is old, so I am guessing that your Mac Pro is old. The AJA Kona card AND the Apple Fibre card CANNOT BE in a x1 slot.
If you are unsure, check the bottom (4th) selection, which will give you x4 x4 x8 x8, so you can properly test your system.

when doing tests, ALWAYS start with a new project, go into EASY SETUPS, select what you want (like HD, DVCProHD, 59.94) and once the project opens, open up a NEW SEQUENCE. Then import your KiPro media, and do your test.

Let me know.

FWIW, this file plays just fine on a Kona3 and KonaLHi from the viewer.

It is 720p24 with 3:2 progressive pulldown so perhaps that's what you are thinking is stuttery as technically 60% of the frames are dupes.

It looks normal and plays fine, though. There isn't a problem with this clip.

As Bob says, it might be system related.

It's a fairly new Mac (MacPro 4.1 Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.66Ghz, 8gigs of ram.On the xserve (6 years old) I changed the pre read fetch to the middle option, it was on the 128 option. But the problem occurs on the internal raid as well. PCI slot assignments. Fibre card is slot 4 (dual channel) ATI Radeon is slot 1 kona is slot 4 and matrox compressHD is slot 3

I think I've solved the problem. I'd decided to remove my Matrox card to see if I had the playback problem without it.

In the process of tearing the computer apart, i discovered that the Kona card was loose. The aluminum bar that holds the pci cards in with the 2 knurled knobs wasn't tight enough and both the kona and matrox card were flopping around.

After re-seating the cards, I took a pliers to the knurled knobs and made sure there was no pci wiggling going on in there. I put it all back together and everything seems to be all better.

Thanks for all the suggestions and the confirmation that it should work.
