Kona LHi Vs BlackMagic Decklink

I've owned Kona cards before but I'm considering a Black Magic Designs Decklink Studio OR a Kona LHi card. THE main difference appears to be Hardware acceleration. Comments? WHich one is best? The Kona costs twice as much but that is all relative. The cost for either one is still pretty low.

Digital Voodoo 64AV. Also Pinnacle Cinewave. Good products. Forget AJA and Blackmagic.

actually the main difference for me is the quality of the conversions. HD to SD, SD to HD, 720 to 1080 and 1080 to 720. We are testing the Davinci Resolve and as part of that BMD send us an Extreme 3D HD card for output. Very good card and for all the basic editing stuff, it was good, but for conversions, all our Konas just look cleaner. No clue why, just for us that's what I found.

I also much prefer the AJA Control Panel setup for setting up the card vs. the Preference Panel from BMD. That's just a personal thing, nothing to do with the actual operation of the cards.

Otherwise, really it's just what you want to spend. We have all Kona 3's and will have a few LHi's in the near future. BMD has good cards too.

Hello Richard

I'd agree both are low cost these days.

AJA prefer not to AB products but I will list a few points you may wish to look over not covered in the string,

1. All AJA Kona products have an optional Breakout Box and optional 5 meter cable. This can really help for certain professional installs where you don't want weighty cabling hanging off the card (can be damaging) and if you wish to mount the cable connections a distance away from the CPU.

2. The Kona LHi can handle 2k to a degree (but if this is a serious workflow for you I'd consider the Kona 3G).

3. Kona LHi has LTC input.

4. Every AJA product is hand and scope tested and enjoys 3 or 5 year advanced replacement warranty, and what many people consider to be industry leading support for free.

5. There is a mature range of useful and tested free AJA applications for the Kona range on Mac and PC:

6. AJA extensively work with 3rd parties to ensure the product work well, but also to develop unique functionality, for instance the Adobe plug in architecture:

6. AJA products have a lot of longevity, they are rarely EOL'd unless it's really needed, for example the IoSD range from 2004 are today running on Snow Leopard. Also AJA product tend have a lot of room for growth. If you look at the Kona 3, since 2006 has been top dog in the editing world and folks buying the product in 2006 have enjoyed over 70 free software/firmware upgrades to date (as in fully tested feature additions, not patch fixes):

I cannot setup a BMD Decklink 3d to capture in XDCAM format. With AJA Kona LHE was very easy. I'm using FCP 3.0.
