Audio Crackles from FCP 7 through Kona Card
on Jul 12, 2010 at 6:23:26 pm

Hello,

My system was recently upgraded to FCP 7.02 from 6.05 and the Kona LHi control panel was upgraded to Version 8.0. I'm working on a Pro Res 1080i 29.97 sequence and now when I play any clips or sequences externally, the audio crackles and sometimes there are thin lines through the video on the external monitor. If I play the clips with External Video Monitoring turned off, the clips are fine, no crackling, no lines - only when playing everything externally. This is a problem because I'm going to have to output to HDCAM in a few days.

If anyone has experienced this, or has any ideas on how to fix it, I'd greatly appreciate any advice.

Thank you,

Jake

[Jake Diamond] "and the Kona LHi control panel was upgraded to Version 8.0"

Did you uninstall the older drivers before installing the new ones?

[Jeremy Garchow] "Did you uninstall the older drivers before installing the new ones?"

AND did you update the firmware manually? it is not an automatic process.

Gary,

Sorry - I should have done more research before asking - I don't know the answer to this either as it was done over the weekend and I have no idea what they exactly did. I will find out to gather more data.

Thank you,

Jake

Jeremy,

I don't know - someone else did the upgrade. Is there a way I can check?

Thanks,

Jake

Do another uninstall and reinstall.

I had this problem a while back, the audio not the video, with my Kona3. It was suggested that I route all the computer audio to the Kona. This stopped the crackles for me. Have not seen a negative side effect. I turn off the annoying alert sounds anyway but that is a must or else the bonk will make you jump out of your seat.

Thanks Michael. I tried this and it fixed it in some places, but not all. It seems pretty random.

Hi guys
I have the same problem with fcp 7.0.2, osx 10.6.3 and kona LHi 8.0 on an octo, 16GB Ram. It's a brand new system so the kona never was on a previous version. Everything is up to date.
I tried the 8.0 NDD but it still has the same problem.
I will try to downgrade the control panel and the firmware. Hope it'll help.

Please let me know if you have any other suggestions.
Thanks
Olivier

Edit: ooh and I tried Michael's suggestion to route the system audio to the kona. It did not fix the problem.

What is your "Ref In" set to? Do you have a stable BB or tri-level sync?

Thanks Michael
My Genlock is set to Freerun. I don't have a deck, I mainly use the Kona for monitoring as I work with file-based XDcam.

Would a BB do the trick?

Sorry Jake for hijacking your post.

Hmmm... Freerun should be fine. You shouldn't need a BB signal for just monitoring. No deck connected? Any SDI input?

No input at all. The monitor is connected component and the audio directly connected to the speakers using AES/EBU.

I'm cutting some XDcam 1080p30 stuff and since my monitor does not have an sdi input, I have to monitor through component at 1080i29,97. I read somewhere else that the crackling might be because I'm monitoring at another res.
I might try to connect my broadcast monitor through HDMI/DVI.
Is HDMI good enough for grading?

Thanks for your help.
Olivier

What 'res' are you monitoring?

1080p30 XDcam and 1080i29.97 are really the same thing, that is your 1080p XDcam can be monitored @ 1080psf29.97 (which is the 1080i setting on the Kona @ 29.97 fps).

What speakers do you have? Have you tried the analog audio outs?

Thanks Jeremy - I wasn't aware of this. So I bet using an HDMI won't make a difference.

Michael - The analog audio had the same problem. I have Roland DS-5 speakers.

Thanks for your suggestions guys

Is your sequence set to 16 or 24bit audio?

24bit.
But the problem isn't only in the audio. Just like the OP, I have some thin horizontal white lines on the output video.

ANd your footage is 16bit I take it?

[Olivier Aubut] "Just like the OP, I have some thin horizontal white lines on the output video."

What else do you have in the ay of PCI cards in your mac? This sounds like either a configuration issue or mismatched settings.

I have a mix of 16 and 24bit audio in a 24bit sequence.

The LHi is in slot 2 and I have a Caldigit PCI-E card in slot 4.

I'd put the raid on slot 2 and Kona in slot 3.

The mixed audio is probably causing your crackles as well.

Thanks - I'll give it a try.

I Changed the sequence bit depth and the crackling is happening on both 16 and 24bit. So I doubt that this is the problem.

Hopefully the card order will help.
I'll post the results.
Thanks Jeremy

But that still leaves you with mixed audio sources.

Sorry, I wasn't clear at all.

I tested some 16bit footage on a 16bit sequence and some 24bit footage on a 24bit sequence. Audio problems on both.

Am I missing something?

[Olivier Aubut] "Am I missing something?"

No, I missed it. I get crackles sometimes if my audio isn't lined up (44.1 vs 48, 16 vs 24, etc). It has been a really long time, though. It's also troubling that you are getting video hits. Something doesn't seem like it's configured correctly.

Well, the reorder didn't fix the problem but the downgrade seems to have done the trick.
I'm now on control panel 7.5.1 NDD and there is no more crackling or video glitches. Huzza!

I hope someone from AJA reads this.

Thanks for your help Jeremy

We just installed a Kona LHi last week, and were experiencing the exact same problem - random audio crackling and video hits. I followed your lead - uninstalled Kona LHi Driver 8.0, installed 7.5.1, and all is well so far - crackling and hits are gone. Thanks for sharing your solution!

Mike

There is a new release for the KONA LHi. The new release version is 8.0.1. This release addresses a KONA LHi issue where some users experienced intermittent glitches in video and audio. Features and improvements are otherwise exactly the same as the version 8.0 driver.

Visit the AJA website at the following URL to obtain this version:
