AJA Kona movie player software needed
on Jan 22, 2010 at 4:09:18 pm

I need a simple program that does the following:

1) Open any Apple Prores quicktime file (we use two formats: PAL and 1080i25)
2) Scrub and play the file out AJA Kona LHe's HDSDI output
3) SHOW THE CORRECT TIMECODE IN THE USER INTERFACE

AJA is nice enough to ship two programs with every AJA product that is supposed to be able to do this: AJA Deck Control and AJA TV. However, they don't show the correct timecode - they both show the timecode as calculated at 30fps. I have posted here regarding this bug, and have also sent a mail to AJA (support@aja.com). No response.

Do you know of any other software besides Final Cut Pro that can do this?

Thanks
Francois

Francois

I emailed support right after you posted this and it is a known issue so maybe they saw the 2 emails from US as one single issue.

They have identified the issue and I was told it will be fixed in the next driver release, but I am not sure when that will be.

Hi Gary

Do you know of any other simple program that can do this? Maybe Final Cut Express? Would it show correct 25fps timecode in the UI?

Thanks
Francois

Virtual VTR?

Francois,

A little birdy whispered in my ear and told me that this is only an issue when the clips do not have source TC in them {ie: captured or created w/o TC}.
Could you tell me if this is true on your system?

I am working on a project and cannot change my system to test this.

Hi Gary

I am capturing a studio's live program output. I am using AJA Deck Control application to capture. So, no, I am not connected to a deck. And I suppose there would then be no timecode captured.

The erroneous timecode displayed in the UI is still caused by a bug in AJA Deck Control and AJA TV. And both apps display "25 fps" - so they read the correct timecode standard back from the file, but they don't use it to calculate the current timecode - they use 30 fps.

Regarding Virtual VTR: I spent two weeks trying to get that app stable. Used a G5 and a Mac Pro, internal and fibre SAN, with LSe and LHe capture cards - I could not get it to capture reliably on any combination of hardware. It always dropped frames at different random intervals, while AJA deck control captured flawlessly using the same hardware. I actually bought a copy of the Virtual VTR - I still have the dongle here.

Thanks for your input
Francois

Yeah So why are you not using "house sync" or TOD for the capture?
there are numerous ways to get TC into your system, regardless of the card you are using, this is the root of the issue.

I understand what the issue is, what I am telling you is that because you are not capturing or defining AUX TC- it is only the TC reader is defaulting to NDF 30 fps and it is doing this because of the way you are capturing. (it shouldn't but it does.)

Mmmmm you just gave me an idea... We actually use LTC to distribute TOD to several studio clocks. Would I be able to get that TOD into a AJA LHe card? Balanced audio?

You would need the Adrielec box that turns LTC in to rs-422/serial. Either that, or spring for an LHi that has dedicated LTC in.

sure, balanced audio over XLR's or embedded in the HDSDI.

TC would need to be converted to 9-pin for ingest into the LHE, both Horita and I think miranda both make adaptors to convert the signal to 9-pin serial for the card.

Final Cut Pro? Turn on the tc burn in feature on the Kona. Should be picking up proper sequence tc there. If you need clip tc, then you need to change the seq tc to match.

nope.

He is working thru the Kona software tools, FCP is not part of the layoff he uses, and the issue is specific to PAL frame rates not being read properly when output to the screen, the Viewer is reading the file incorrectly.

Cool, just offering a suggestion as he asked if there were any other tools.

And I should add that FCP works here on 1080i25 content.
